Title: Dove Hunting
Post by: squirrelsniper on December 26, 2004, 07:25:56 PM
Who thinks dove hunting should be allowed in Michigan??
A few days ago i counted 50 dove at my bird feeder and with a shotgun could have killed them all in 1 shot! I think we should have a dove season in every state. (they taste very good, similar to woodcock a darker meat)
Plus they smell like deer venision and taste just like but a little less potent. : )

I don't know the dove population in Michigan, but I'm sure that if you make an inquiry into the Wildlife and Parks Dept, they'll at least give you some information or resources on what information is out there. It could be that Michigan is incapable of maintaining a dove population, or that the population is on the upward swing and there will BE a dove season. Regardless, get involved and see what needs to be done before there will be a dove season so you can savor the flavor of success with a side of dove to boot.

I say yes because simply where ever I go in NY, I see lots and lots of doves. I would like to shoot some for the breast meat, but NY law prohibits it.

with the money we goofy hunters spend on our quarry? of course! in no time we'll be building habitat, planting feedlots, securing protected areas for breeding. in a couple years they'll be whining about dove poop on their cars and insisting we kill more of them.

I admit,I voted no,but any state with a good population of doves should have a season.I also think that if there isnt a season,it should be because of the lack of doves only.If there is a dove shortage in a state,I think they should work on preserving habitat and doves for a few years.Maybe....Doves Unlimited. Then let them hunt. But if we hunt animals that are scarce, they only get more scarce.Conservation is the way. When I say conservation,I mean conservation groups started by hunters or pro-hunting.Ducks Unlimited,Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and stuff like that. Not peta style "conservation".

Where do you go in NY (squirrelhunter91)where there is any signifcant population of doves ? I live in extreme western NY and never see more than 4 at any given time at our feeder. Not to say there aren't any, but where ? I was stationed in the military in Oklahoma in the late 80s and couldn't believe the size of some of the flocks. I once went to a cook out down there where a guy had cooked  up a couple a dozen or so doves he shot in his grain field. They didn't tatse bad, that I remember. Like I said  though, the population down there was alot better than here.

Dove hunting kicks butt, and any state with a huntable population should have a season. Its a great way to introduce your kids to huntin, because during dove seasons, the weather is still pretty warm, and you dont need to be ultra concealed or ultra quiet to hunt them with sucess.

You don't even need a decoy..... Just walk through brush piles and kick em out. I do it just for kicks.... we don't have a season here.

I am down in the Southern Zone. I go to Sullivan, Schoharie, Rockland, Westchester and anywhere else where we have acess to land. At my feeder in Rockland, there must be 40-50 doves a day. Usually one or two land, then they start cooing and attract more, then they start cooing and then the process goes on and on until the squirrel comes. He usually scares them away. But there is the occasional dove that will stand up to the squirrel, only to get scratched up by the bushytail.

Watch, I'll get some pics of all the doves. They will be here shortly for the morning feeding.

man, hurry up and post them pics. september 1 is kinda my hunting season (opener) dove season starts here in south dakota, and i am always at a little farm pond outside of town, and the doves are thick! it is not high crossing shots like you hear about, or 3 doves to a box of shells. i sit on the pond bank behind some old farm machinery, and whackem when they come out of the cornfield. easy, incoming shots. i get about 10 birds a night for the 1st few nights, then it drops off. cant wait to see the pics.
