Title: Try Again Tomorrow.
Post by: bohicajuan on September 17, 2010, 08:32:10 PM
Going to head down after I get off work tonight and try again. Supposed to be in the 90's again and no rain in the forcast. As far as I know nobody has taken one yet on our property, so we'll see what happens.

Hope you got one Bo. I spent my Saturday drinkin' cold beer and listening to bluegrass at the Asheville Brewgrass Festival. They had 42 brewers there and some great music, the Infamous Stringdusters headlined. Plus being able to sit back drink beer and watch the hippies was pretty amusing too.

Watching hippies is kind of like going to the zoo, Ned.

Glad somebody is scoring, because I struck out again. Nobody showed up this weekend and I had the property all to myself. Woke up Saturday and  thermometer said it was 80 degrees at 6am, and there was zero wind. It got up to about 92 by noon and stayed there the whole day. I don't remember this part of Georgia being this hot, this time of year before.

It's a good thing I brought the anti-tick stuff BC sent me because they were ALL OVER the clubhouse, but they stayed off of me and I have to say, that stuff really works!!!! O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

Since I was alone, I spent most of Saturday scouting. I finally put up my portable stand in a bottom that had some white oaks and a creek with some water in it about 3pm and hunted until dark. Saw a few squirrels though, and at least that was enough to keep me from getting discouraged.

Went back to the same spot on Sunday and about 1pm saw 4 doe on the other side of the creek. They were a good 50-60 yards away and walking through some thick stuff, I'd have thought twice about shooting through with a rifle, so I wasn't going to try it with my bow.

Maybe I should practice more so I can get back to making those 70 yard shots at 10" plates like I used to do?        :idiot2 :uglystupid2 :buck2

It was weird though, because it was like NOBODY was hunting. Usually I'll see some guys from surrounding clubs, but this weekend it felt like I was the only one hunting in the whole state.

It sure sounds like you was the only person hunting, bo. Hunting during hot weather is really tough.

yea Bo, I have never seen it this hot this late in Sept. We have had .6 of rain in the last month here in SO GA. Waiting on some rain to put in the rest of the food plots. It was 97 here yesterday and for the life of me, I can't even imagine trying to hunt in this weather. I wish they would back the season up about a month for Bow and extend Rifle until the end of Jan.

I can't even imagine trying to hunt in this weather. I wish they would back the season up about a month for Bow and extend Rifle until the end of Jan.

When I was a kid, gun season always opened the first Saturday in November.

They moved it back to spread the kill out more over the entire season, back around 1980; claiming that 60% of all deer killed in the state were killed in the first 3 days, when it opened in November.

Bow season back then opened in late September and ran into late October.

I wish we would go back to a November opener and let it run into January and maybe have a late January hunt for bows and black powder.

If I say what I think about your 59 deg, I might get banned for life!!!! LOL! Gonna get a cool front this weekend and the temp will get all the way down to ....... 90 !!!!!!

When you guys are trying to hunt in those freezing temps in a couple months, I'll think about you while I am in a long sleeve shirt and still swatting bugs. I think I got out the coveralls maybe 1 or 2 times all of last hunting season.

There is some weird do-do going on here. It was supposed to be hot and sunny all day with the high about 92.

It was for the most part.

Around 4pm it got cloudy and it started to pour. Thunder and lightning and it rained at least an hour and about 30 minutes of that was like a hurricane!

It'll probably snow tomorrow or we'll have a volcano!!

I had to get out and kill something, too. I got two squirrels yesterday. I was doing good until the rain started pouring down and didn't quit.
I bought a lifetime hunting license this year. It is going to save me a lot of money in the future.  :)

Sounds like you wasted your money.  I mean, you're already older than dirt.  Just how many more years do you think you actually have?  ???

Well this weekend was pretty much a repeat of last weeks.

Saturday was hot and muggy and I didn't see squat. Starting Sunday afternoon  it rained off and on all day.

As the clouds were coming in Sunday, the temperature began to drop, and I'm guessing the barometer too, and I had 2 or 3 doe come in behind me, but I couldn't turn around to ge a shot.

Had one circle back and sneak up on me and get within range, but before I could draw she moved back into heavier cover.

Don't know if it was the same deer, but saw 2 more about 5pm on the other side of the creek bottom heading towards a food plot, that I decided not to hunt. Oh well!

I hunted by myself again this weekend. We've had a few guys come out and hunt during the week, but nobody has killed anything yet on our property.

I know of only 1 deer being killed near us and that was a doe in one of the adjacent clubs. Still not sure how many people are going out to hunt.

Oh well, at least the Falcon's beat the Saint's Sunday! O0

Bummer, bo.  At least you are seeing a few.
Our youth season is open and not much is being harvested. One kid missed a huge 14 pointer a couple of nights ago where I work.

Got one Sunday morning. Nice little 6 point that was walking with 2 doe. They were making their way throw the bottom and I was up on a ridge, that I hoped was a funnel, and thankfully it was.

Dressed out at about 95lbs. I took him to a prcessor that I've never been to before, and they had a couple of nice deer, including an 11 point that went about 120 B&C. The rack was wide, but lacked mass. I'd have zapped it though. Our club had no deer killed up until this weekend and now all of a sudden we have 5 deer.

My 6 point, a spike and three doe were all killed from Friday to Sunday. It's amazing what some good weather will do for you. It was about 50-55 all three mornings so it kept them moving.

When I got up this morning it was 36 degrees.   Even if the boy doesn't go this weekend, I may have to get out there anyways.

Maybe it's just me, but I think going from 100 grain Magnus to 125 grain Magnus made a difference.

It just "felt" better. The shot was to his right side as he was quartering away and was walking up a slight grade. It hit him center and actually punctured the heart.

He ran less than 50 feet before going down. He was trailing the does, but he wasn't in rut. He was about a 1 1/2 years old judging by his teeth.

BTW....

I was IN my Ol Man portable climber!!!    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
