Title: My biggest buck.........
Post by: lady_hunter on January 02, 2011, 01:11:15 AM
I haven't been on in a long time. I killed my biggest buck on October 29, 2010 with a crossbow. Most people would say that a neck shot with an arrow is risky, maybe so, but having made a shot similar at 40 yards 5 years ago on a 5-point, a 15 yard shot on this big guy was nothing. I tracked him 80 yards down into a ravine. An hour and a half later I had him almost to the truck before I could get hubby to answer his phone and come help the last 30 yards. I had about a 100 yard drag back. Not bad for an Arkansas public land buck.

Thanks! We are all doing well here. @ of the kiddos are away form home and the last one is going to college this spring.  O0
Deer season has been a rough one this year. The boy got a doe during muzzle loader season and missed a nice 8-point during gun season. We had way to many acorns on the ground this season and no squirrels  :'( Hubby didn't even get a shot at a deer this year. Maybe next year will be better.

My people are a little south of you in New Port, Searcy, Batesville, Heber Springs and on down to Little Rock and Hot Springs.

Been through Harrison a few times and would love to come back and chase the smallmouth in the Buffalo river. We don't have many smallies in Georgia. I heard the bears are coming back up there along with an elk season too. Get you an elk yet?

Yep, not to far.
The Buffalo is fun to fish for sure. And yes the bears are here, mostly taken on private land over bait. And there are plenty of elk, but it is by permit draw only. So no, I haven't got to kill an elk yet. I see them all of the time while deer hunting though.

Got my buck scored a couple of days ago. He would be a Pope and Young Record book buck except that he wasn't taken with compound, recurve or long bow :'(
But that's okay because he will make the Arkansas State Record book O0  Anyway, he scored 127" My taxidermist said he would only go about 110. He was surprised when he scored that high. I am getting a shoulder mount done on him and can't wait to get him back.

I wouldn't worry about Pope & Young if I were you lady_hunter.  O0  They're an antiquated organization that refuses to change.  Most people I know have very little, if any, respect left for them.

Still a heck of a buck any way that you look at it.  Congrats again!!!  O0

What BC said! O0 O0 O0

A trophy doesn't have to make P&Y or B&C to be a trophy. In fact a trophy can be a spike, 6-point or even a doe. What's important is that you got outdoors and enjoyed the experience. It's nice to kill something and it's great when you get a big-un, but you don't have to zap a world record to enjoy hunting!  O0 O0

I totally agree with both of you! He is a trophy, just like all of the deer I take. I never go out expecting to take a monster. I hunt to get meat for the table and put some in the freezer. I did accomplish the thing I told my husband I was determined to do this year, and that was get a big buck. I got a buttin buck and a doe last season. I wasn't expecting one this big. Things just turned out that way. I thank the Lord for every deer I get.
I go hunting to enjoy being out in the wilds, whether I get anything or not. I just love being out there.
