Post by: DIXIEBANJO on January 12, 2005, 05:38:21 PM
After shooting the nicest lookin fox Ive ever seen,I want to try out predator/varmint hunting.Ive shot a few varmints in my time, but never really went out just for them.Im mainly goin after grey and red fox, coyote, and bobcat.Do I need really calls? What other basic gear do predator hunters need?Dont know anything about predator hunting.Any suggestions on methods or gear?Help me..........I want to know how I can best put a dent in the varmint population of Va!

I've always planned on getting around to it, but every time I saved up for a nice electronic caller, I'd either have to put it back into the family budget, or I'd find something else I just had to have. From what I understand though, a remote controlled electronic caller is the prime way to go. Also, some kind of decoy would probably help too.

up here all we do is basically get a white bedsheet and cut a couple of holes to see out, then hunker down in a snowbank.  I've got just a cheapo predator call (goverment hunter from cabelas) and i've had really good luck with it.  When you start calling if they are going to come in they will within a matter of minutes if they are hungry. One other thing, when you do finally get them into range when you want to take a shot, simply stop calling.99% of the time they will stop dead in their tracks and sit down........i've never used decoys, but i've heard that a plain white rage tied to a short stick works fine as long as there is some wind..........

good luck

I've never heard or seen that last bit of information. If/when I get around to lowering the coyote populace around here, I'll have to give that one a try.

Check your state regulations to see if electronic calls are legal to use for predators.  If so, get a Cass Creek call (below is the link to their calls).  They're really easy to use and relatively cheap (around $25-30).

Shoot. I don't even need a weapon to take down a hippo or an elephant. All I have to do is put my wife in front of it, stand behind the animal, and tell her she's looked awufully old today. Garuanteed that animal will be frozen stiff in a matter of seconds just from the look she'll try to give me.

actually if you want to shoot hippos with a bow,,,you want to look up tink, yes of "tinks 69" fame . he now has the best bow hunting safaries in africa.  in addition to hippo you can hunt lion ,leopard, even elephant. when he got out of the scent business he went to africa hunting and fell  in love with the place.
