Title: First day
Post by: fuzztsimmers on October 15, 2011, 05:52:42 AM
Up at 5:30 to get ready for first day of squirrel season. Was going to go muzzleloader for deer, but my cousin wants to hunt and we decided to go out for squirrel so he can. He hasn't hunted since he was 12 or so, figure missing a chance at a deer is less important than get a family member back into hunting.

We started at 8:00am and finished around o'dark hundred. I got one with a shotgun and one with my cousin's 22mag. The one i shot with the 22mag was like 60yards away through some thick stuff and he did a back flip when i hit him. My dad got 5 with a shotgun. And my cousin only got one but he work hard for that one.

Well, it's straight uo 0500. I woke up earlier with a serious case of need to be in the woods with a rifle. Y'all know what that means. The only cure is to just go and stalk and kill the dastardly bucktoothed varmints.

Coffee is brewing and wife is sound asleep. Maybe I will have to sneak out if she's not awake.

I still have some scores to settle with some squirrels from last year.

Snipers forward!

:) Well, was my first time out this year and I got 5: 3 fox and 2 greys this morning, 5 shots, 5 squirrels. It was tough going with all the leaves on the trees and tall weeds and brush. Finding some of the dead ones took some time after they were knocked out of the trees.

When I got home and was cleaning the squirrels, I noticed one still had an acorn in its mouth.  :)

Legal limit is 6 squirrels here in Iowa. I think I saw a total of 7 squirrels today, was slim pickings.

.17  HMR rules!

It was about 0730 when I got home this morning, still too wet to mow so I jumped on the 4 wheeler with the trusty old JW15 and ran up to a little thicket just above the barn. Something was really rattling the hickories. I sat there for about 20 minutes until I figured out it was two of those little ratty red squirrels that aint much bigger than a chipmunk. They were not cutting any of them just run out on a limb and drop nuts all over the place. I shooted both of them in the face. I sat there another half hour and saw not a thing, so I ran on up on the hill to the big woods and kilt a big old Fox squirrel before I had to go Mow. Might hit another section of woods with some big oaks tomorrow. I have killed five so far this year if you count the two runts from this morning. Does anyone eat them little red pests?

 O0 Nice going,occ!

We don't have those red runts here, have mostly grays and fox squirrels locally referred to as red squirrels.

I was out yesterday morning and nailed 2 grays and 3 fox squirrels, 5 shots for 5 squirrels.  :) When the HMR barked, the squirrels dropped.

Am in Burlington, IA. I live pretty close to the end of North 6th St., on the river bluff. Snake Alley is south of me, a few blocks on North 6th St.

We were on the same side of the state.  I used to drive right down that way on 380 all the time and cross back into Missouri on my way home to vivit family.  Wish I'd known back then.  It would have been nice to meet up with someone on here and hit the woods.  I really miss IA weather.  I absolutely loved the winters!  We don't get much/sometimes any snow down this way.  Would have really liked to have seen where you make your knives.  I've always wanted to learn the craft.  By the way...  They look fantastic!

Thanks, Justin! You are most welcome stop anytime you get through here again!

I like winter better than hot summer, too.

My old jonboat and rifles are always happy to have company along, too.  :)
