Title: What Gun Are You Going To Use?
Post by: Big58cal on November 01, 2011, 09:05:19 AM
With a lot of the gun seasons for deer getting ready to start (and already started), what kind of gun are you planning on using?  :?

I try to use a different one each year just to spread things around a little and get a little variety in things.  Got out my "list" last night looking for a different caliber than what I've already used, and preferably with a scope.  Saw a Marlin 1894 lever action in .45 Colt with a Leupold Alaskan scope on it that caught my eye.  :)   Got to digging around in the safe and found it and put it in the front.  I've got some .45 Colt ammo, but I'm going to go today to get some more.  I looked through the scope and it looked like the crosshairs were off a little, so I'm going to loosen the screws up and get it straight.  We'll have to see how it shoots in the next day or two.  O0

So what about the rest of you?  What are you planning on taking?  A tried & true meat getter or something else you've acquired recently?

Just using my 270.

I've killed more deer than I care to count with my .270.  O0   A girl that I work with, her husband is just getting into hunting, so I offered my Savage .270 to him to use if he wanted to.

The score on my 270 is zero. That is even before i got it. Hope to change that this year though.

I will be using Ole reliable......... Ruger M77 in .308.   Still haven't finished building my .270 from last year.  I will also be carrying my Marlin .44mag with open sights.

My big push this year is to start using cast bullets, my own or commercial for the 45-70 Govt.
I've got one set up for local conditions where ranges start at 20 yards and won't get beyond 75.

The other 45-70 is destined to go to Maine and that one is still a pita >:( to get a decent load with cast bullets that are above plinker level.

That rifle has a jacketed bullet load that will rock your world when you touch it off.

Standby for this year is Rem 742 in 30-06

Got the little .45 Colt sighted in.  O0   Now we'll have to see if I get lucky enough to have anything come out in front of me.  >:D

I thought my CVA 50 cal. would knock em down but these deer are tuff this year! 3 shots for the season and only put a small 7pter in the freezer. Lost a nice doe and had a limb get me on another!

Glory be.  I took that pita rifle to the range today and one of my goofiest loads seems to work.

Imagine a load of Triple 7 and a Magma 405 gr cast bullet seems to be the ticket so far. If I can keep three rounds within 3 to 4 inches at 100 I'm good to go.

Yeah that was one thing I noticed about it too.  The other side is actually prettier than the side shown.  ;)

It is still bow season here for another 2 weeks then since I am in a shotgun area I always seem to go with my .50 cal CVA muzzleloader. Most people around here give me a hard time saying "you only get one shot!". I just look at them funny and say, "If you make the first shot count how many more do you need?"  ??? ???

You basically one get 1 shot at a deer anyway.  Make it count and you won't need any follow up shots.  O0   Plus, follow up shots usually don't connect anyway.  It's funny, if I'm hunting and I hear someone shoot 2, 3, 4, 5 times, I start to grin, knowing that they missed.  ;D

Yep on that! One shot, nailed it. Two shots, probably. Three shots, deer is out of the county by then.

The only thing I'm using this year is my issued M9 (9mm sidearm).  It doesn't take much for a roadside crippled deer.

FYI, they all taste the same, roadside or in harvested in the woods, unless they get too plowed by the vehicle.   ;D

I ate many a road killed deer in college.  O0   One spring semester, I told the CO in our county to give me a call if he got any road kills on the weekends.  One weekend, I had 6 deer hanging in the barn that I had to skin and process by myself.  :o :tickedoff   ;D   My roommate and I lived off of deer and fried potatoes that semester.  ;D

The ones that got hit in the head were the best.  O0

Gotta do what you can.  I have a friend who does that, I've even seen people take the deer after I've worked an accident depending on if the office would allow them to take it.

One of my fellow officers on my shift has received 3 kills this season, already.  :)
