Title: Anybody scoring????
Post by: J-BUCKS on November 07, 2011, 04:55:01 PM
Been so busy at work the last couple weeks that I have not been on much. Just wanting to know if anybody is making Gutpiles other than BC. I know that little thing he shot prob put everybody else down in the dumps, but still, we can talk about our itty bitty deer and how we got what we got. So let me hear from you all! Who has fresh Hamburger and loins in the freezer???

Ned's dad has been racking them up.  O0   That may be about it though.  I've been trying for weeks to get a doe and can't find one to save my sou!!  :tickedoff

Our gun season opens this weekend and I'm hoping between the 200 lbs of corn I dumped out near the saddle and bucks/hunters pushing the does will bring one up by me.  O0

As for my little deer........  ::)   That was a freak!  I got EXTREMELY lucky!  Everything aligned just right, from me missing that doe, seeing the buck, and then sticking with him like a hound dog.  O0

Will FINALLY be in a tree this Friday and Sat. for a quick 2 day hunt. The weather looks good and the rut is pretty much on where I will be going. Then it's one week back to work then off for The week of Thanksgiving. I am hoping for many gutpiles in the next 3 weeks!!!

And yes dad has been laying the smack down......he has killed 5 already an 8, 9 and a huge 6 and 2 does.

I got out of my patrol truck last night to check a building by a high fenced area. About 10 feet from me was the gate for the fenced off area.

Suddenly, an nice 10 pointer came running along the fence and stopped by the closed gate. He turned and faced me like he wanted something.  ???

We stood there looking at each other for a couple of minutes while I slowly unsnapped my holster, not sure of the buck's intent. If the buck was aggressive enough to take me on, I was going to shoot him. We can't afford to have a deer that would be dangerous where people work. The close by building is an office building.

Our deer in the installation are really close to rut and the bucks are chasing the does.

Finally, the buck decided whatever goes through deer's heads, and walked back the way he came. I didn't see any deer on the other side of the tall gate.  ???

As most of you know, I aint the greatest shot in the world, So as our season opened on the 22nd of October, I went out on opening morning to one of the stands on our club that has been productive just about every opening morning for the past 4 years. I was in the stand about 2 hrs and had a Doe come out at about 120 yards. I pulled the 270 down on her and shot. She stood there and kept feeding. I shot 4 more times at her and she paid me no mind!  :tickedoff :tickedoff :tickedoff. So, I got out of the stand and went to the truck and pulled a target out. Set it at 100 yards on a 4 x4 pallet. shot twice and didnt even hit the pallet! I moved the pallet up to 50 yards and shot 1 time and was hitting 8" low! I had to adjust the scope up 24 clicks to get it an 1" high at 100. The 2nd Saturday, I didnt see anything and I was pretty down on myself for letting my rifle scope get off that much. Last Saturday my son and I hunted in the morning and we didn't see much since the wind was blowing 15 to 20 mph. My dad called and said he was going back out after lunch, so we went back to the club around 4 pm. I went to the stand where I killed the 8pt last year and about 15 mins before dark, a spike stepped out into the food plot at 75 yards. I drilled him and he ran right to me and fell over. 20 yard drag and he was in the truck! Just goes to show you, that no matter how busy you are, Shoot your rifle before the season!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Congrats on the deer!!!  O0   Should be some really good eating!

Now..... How old are you?  How long have you been hunting?  ::)   How many deer have you missed because "your scope was off"?  I'm beginning to see somewhat of a pattern here............  ::) ;D

Last time I looked at my driver's license it said I was 44! LOL! I am one of those guys that shooting deer is never automatic. I have done better in the fact that I have actually killed a deer every year for the past 5 or 6 years. I don't really know what it is about shooting a high power. It just seems I have to miss 1st before I can get it right every year! Oh, and the ragging I get from my son and my brother has become part of our hunting season every year. I have done a lot to try and make it better but I just don't know. Changed rifles, shot open sites, put on a scope, took off a scope, bought a different scope. Just part of my deer hunting stories now I guess.

 ;D Well, yeah, more or less.

But out in the remote areas of the place, the deer are regular wild deer.

O0 Nice deer, J! And you had a nice SHORT DRAG to your vehicle.

Did you ever consider getting a little .223 or something like that, to use to practice with during the "off" season?  I'm betting that if you get in a little more trigger time during the spring/summer, you'll be better on making the shots.  O0

Post by: J-BUCKS on November 09, 2011, 11:33:55 AM
yea, I agree it is not enough trigger time. Working 14 hrs a day 6 days a week, you dont get much time anyway. I have not even went fishing since May. That is how bad it is right now for me. I will get more time in though, cause all it takes is to miss a couple and it really sticks in my craw. I was sitting here thinking, in the last 4 years I have missed 2 bucks and 2 Does. I have killed 3 bucks and a Doe, so I am batting about 50%. I am Calling ALbert or Chipper  to see if they have any tips to get the average up! LOL!

I have been spending way more time on the Range then in the deer woods. Today just for my last two shots I stuck a new target up at 100 yards and fired two very different loads. One was a 300 gr Rem with SR 4759 the other a 405 gr. Rem pushed with 2400. Much to my surprise both bullets landed within an 1 of each other both being about 2" low.

I take the rifle home, stick the boresighter in and by watching the hair move I clicked it the appropriate numbers. The I dialed the scope ( Japanese made Tasco of some vintage) through the powersetting  and Son of a ....when I passed the 8x going up the sight wire moved sideways. Anything below 8x stays the same. Now I got to find a place in Canada which fixes that. Good luck to myself. It may cost me more then what the scope is worth.  Yes, I got another scope on the rifle now and back to the Range we go.

I whacked a doe on the second day of bow season (oct 16th) and got some meat in the freezer. I've been hunting just about everyday since looking for a mature buck. I passed on several young bucks and finally got a shot on this fella last night (2 days before bow season ends). I saw him last week chasing does in the field and noticed he was limping bad. He must have been hit by a car and broke his left hind leg which in turn made his right antler grow irregularly. (so it is true!  O0) Imagine what he'd be like if he didn't get hit

Congrats on the buck!!!!  I wouldn't have turned him down.  O0

I am going to do a european mount with him because he is so "unique". He got within 25yds from me the first time I saw him but stayed in the brush so I had no shot  There was no passing on this guy if/when I got another crack at him. I actually had a huge 10 point sneak up on me about a half hour before I shot this one but saw he me as soon as I saw him. BUSTED! :tickedoff :tickedoff I'll be lookin for him next year! :knuppel2

Yeah I know! This year bow season started Oct 15th to Nov 18th Then the regular gun season starts Nov 19th to Dec 12th then a late archery/muzzleloader season for 9 days after that.  Starting next year the bow season will start Oct 1st.  :D This is how messed up NY is.......as of last year we can use crossbows BUT...........only during the gun season!  :uglystupid2 :uglystupid2 fortunately that will also change next year to any season. Can anyone help me understand why i still live here? ???

Georgia was the last state in the country to legalize compound bows. The first year it was legal, it could only be used during the gun season. The following year they legalized it during the regular bow season and no problems.

I thought they would pull the same crap when they wanted to legalize crossbows, but they did with few exceptions get approval from most of the input by hunters.

There was and still is a small but vocal group of bow hunters who want them used only during gun season. I bow hunt with a recurve now, and while this debate was going on, I said they needed to ban the compound bows during the bow season too and only allow them during the gun season. I was only kidding, I didn't want that, but just wanted to hear the reaction.

Oh yea! You guessed it. They said THAT'S DIFFERENT!!! Of course it is. It's something that affects you, and when it affects you the response is always....THAT'S DIFFERENT!

The reaction of Georgia's idea of modern bow hunting equipment and crossbow hunting is akin to PA's long time view of no hunting on Sundays.

Bo, re-curve hunting is getting back to pretty much bareback ( traditional) hunting.  O0

I have a pal, a firefighter, that lives in WI. He stick bow hunts all over the US and can relate some great hunting adventures. I guide (free, of course) for him in this area.

I support bow hunting and recommend it for everyone, whatever their choice of equipment.

Haven't been able to fill another tag. We spent a week and a half in the woods and on the first day of Modern gun we saw a forked horn chasing a doe. I had my crossbow because the area we were hunting was a one buck zone. The doe stopped 20 yards from where my son and I were setting, behind a tree no doubt with no shot. The buck also stopped about that distance, but farther behind the doe. My son had a buck tag to use, but since it was a forked horn, he wasn't a legal buck. So no shots that day. We spent the rest of the week hunting and saw absolutely no deer.
At least I got a buck during muzzle loader. Come December the 3rd, we are heading to south Arkansas for a permit hunt. Hope to fill my second buck tag and at least one of my doe tags before coming back home.

We're expecting !!

NO, not a diaper pooper. OMG !!The very thought would make me look for a rope and strong treelimb for a double hanging.

We are expecting our first good dump of snow today. I've been cooling my rump the last several weeksin a ground blind looking for any deer. So far, nothing! Nobody that hunts on my neighbors 100 acres got anyhing. There a some tracks but it looks like all movement is after shooting light.

You're right John it is and I think it's great too. My only problem is all the freaking infighting we have. I know I've said this here a thousand times, but it's not the anti crowd we need to worry about. It's us acting like children trying to force our way of hunting on someone who prefers hunting another way. If it's legal and you have the skill, then hunt  that way.
Title: Re: Anybody scoring????
Post by: Big58cal on November 23, 2011, 07:29:14 PM
If it's legal and you have the skill, then hunt  that way.

Bo's right, to a certain extent.  ;)   "Skill" means different thiings to different people.  O0   The way I look at it, if it's legal, who's to say who can or can't hunt with the weapon?  2 people, both are dead-eyes at 20 yds, but one is an old man and can't hit crap beyond 20 yds.  The other is a hot-shot that can hit stuff out to 50 yds.  Clearly, on is more proficient than the other at more yardages, but if they limit their shots to what they are comfortable with, who's to say what they can or can't hunt with.  O0

Now granted, I'm just giving Bo a hard way to go on this.  ;D   He hunts with one of those junkey little Black Widow Recurve "vertical" bows  :x  and I hunt with an Excalibur Equinox crossbow (with recurve limbs  ;)  ).  He supports "every type" of hunting, which is the way it should be.  O0   It shouldn't matter to Joe Blow what "I" hunt with.  The main thing is that I'm out there hunting!  If any anti-hunting legislation comes up in my state, I'll vote against it.  O0   That's the main thing, and that's what everyone should keep in mind before they start trashing what another man/woman decides to take hunting with them.  ;)

You must have a couple of horse shoes grafted to your butt. I haven't even seen a deer and they sure don't hang around if you missed after the first shot.

I may try grafting a horseshoe to my butt. Can't hurt! O0 :D ;D

But we need to remember the MAIN THANG!

Even if you don't get a deer, as long as you look cool while you're hunting is enough......Perfect hair, pressed and matching camo, boots with no dirt on them, camo rifle that matches camo you have on, even if its dark put on sunglasses, and make sure they're very, very expensive sunglasses, like Oakely............That's enough!!  :D

Not a thing on Saturday, there is no hunting on Sunday here but I did take out that Husky rifle I bought and spent way more money on it then any other rifle I ever had. It still looks ugly  :crazy2
The bolt still sticks when ejecting unless held in a specific way.

However  that sucker SHOOTS !! 8) :) :)

I don't have a lot of different bullets for it but a large number of powders.
I didn't matter what or how much I pushed that big Hornady RN with, any would have been curtains for a deer at 100 yards without any adjustments on the scope. I'm impressed, not so much on the lack of deer here.

The snow is all gone, the grass is still green and we barely have Frost at night if any and this  Saturday is the end of the Season.
