Title: Think Ill Give It a Whirl
Post by: bohicajuan on October 10, 2014, 04:40:18 PM
This Saturday is the opener for black powder season, but I don't shoot BP. I don't know how many in our club use BP these days, but it can't be more than three or four, so I don't think I'll have any issues. Besides I'm debating on moving one of my ladder stands. Modern gun season opens next Saturday and I don't think it will spook the deer if I give it a week to get them used to it.

O0 I agree with you on that, bo. A week should be plenty enough time. I hope you kill a buck that is so big he needs a neck brace for his rack.

Many folks around here move their stands and hunt days less than a week.

Well, did you get to fling any arrows from that flimsy little stick bow of yours?  :?

Hey! I resemble those remarks! Nope struck out with the bow and went doggin' for deer in south Georgia for opening weekend and struck out.

I took this past Saturday through Thursday off and went down to my other club and managed to get 2 doe. Shot the first doe late Tuesday afternoon at almost dark. She was walking with two other does and I was hoping they might be followed by a buck, but I really was at the edge of shooting light. I was using my Ruger #1 and put a 100 grain Partition behind her shoulder and she jumped straight up in the air. The only way I knew she was hit was that her tail stuck straight out behind her. She took about 8 steps and down she went. By the time I got down out of the tree she was history and it was pitch black.

I COULD have gone back and borrowed a friends ATV, but being a REAL MAN! :-P :-P       I dragged her to a firebreak and dressed her out and using my ever present army issue rope, I just dragged her back to my truck. Then being a REAL, REAL, Man...I took her to the deer processor and had her butchered! ;D ;D :-P :-P

The barometer dropped like crazy and it got cold quick. Wednesday morning it was right at freezing and I saw 5 different deer over the course of the day. All doe, and I was holding out for something with some head gear.

The dang squirrels showed up like it was some kind of horror movie. If there was one squirrel, I'm not lying when I say there had to have been at least 20-25 within site of my tree stand. They all sounded like my ex-wife, chatter, chatter, chatter and I was cursing the fact I only had a single shot rifle and wishing I had my AR! or Mini-14!

Thursday morning was our coldest morning this year,  and I moved to an area that is on our boundry with another club. About 8am I heard a rapid succession of shots coming from the property next door and about 15 minutes later I saw a doe and maybe an 8 point buck following her. I couldn't get a clear shot and had to let them walk. About 30 minutes later I saw 3 doe walking through the bottom coming into our property from that next door. I decided if I could get a clean shot, I was going to take one for Hunters for the Hungry. They moved past me in single file about 30 yards away and I managed to get a neck/shoulder shot on the last one and she dropped before the echo of the gun had ended.

I took this one to the processor and will drive back tomorrow and pick them both up. Too many good football games on this week, so I'm going to stay inside and watch them.

Congrats Bo and thank you by proxy for the donation.

Thats the dangest thing about squirrels, they just seem to know when you are unarmed or out gunned for them. I tried shot gun. One pocket full of slugs, the other full of game loads. No squirrels. Smart lile buggers.
