Title: Flatheads
Post by: John Andrews on May 30, 2015, 10:12:20 AM
I went catfishing yesterday and not having any luck. I was catching drum ( locals call them perch) and no cats.  ???

So, an old Indian rarely gives up the chase and as a last ditch try, I cut up one of the drum for cutbait and the flatheads pounded it. I caught one 5 pounder and one 3 pounder. I lost a couple in snags.

I planned on working in the shop, mowing the yard, and then fishing this evening. Rain cancelled all but one option, working in the shop.

You folks catching any fish?

Wow flats on cut bait ? heard of such things but never tried it yet. We have a flathead tournament coming up the second weekend in June. Might have to give it a shot. Hope to do better than last year. Last year we used goldfish with some success but room for improvement. Winner used live bluegill. When the carp bomb the boat, I might save one to cut for a pole line. This year we also have a smaller johnboat for running the lines. That's gotta be easier than fighting the current drift on a 24 ft pontoon.
The other prob I'm foreseeing is the river is really high right now and might be too high to get to the river house or ramps, yet that weekend. If not, it might be falling and still not great for fishing.

Living in Utah has been seriously detrimental to my catfishing. There are only channels out here and the state record was just over 30lbs. A good size to be sure, but when you've fished the midwest, it's JUST a good sized fish.

I did manage some fishing last night. Took a couple of boys with me and spent so much time getting them tied and re-tied, I only got 10 minutes with my line in the water. A chartreuse spinner caught me a little bass, but it was still fun.
