Title: Cow Elk damage hunt
Post by: D45/70 on December 06, 2016, 03:41:24 PM

Our FWP selected me for a damage hunt for cow elk .

First off I don't NEED an elk let alone two.
The hunt lets me shoot two cows, which are all pregnant now,, a person will be killing 4 elk.
If I did go I have people that would love to have a cow elk this winter.
My problem is...
First off like I said it's like killing 4 elk.
I can hunt a LOT of public land but also a bunch of private land too a lot of which the owners did NOT let hunters in during the general season.
That's my biggest personal problem with the hunt.
I'm glad to hunt and help people out that let public hunt and not charge. I hate to cull someone's heard for them. I'm thinking I may just hunt the public lands and the few land owners that had walk in BMA's

this last season. You have any input ...

Yeah, that sounds like a tough choice, D. If you pass on the culling of that herd, someone else will jump on it. It would be a lot of good easy meat.

The BMA land sounds like a great deal. You must have a lot of elk in MT.

Have you decided how you are going to hunt?

It will be a spot and stock hunt on Public lands and the BMA's that where open to the public in the General season. That is still Many 1000 acres of very huntable land and elk Habitat.
"Tent camping trip ".
I think it will be more of a coyote calling trip with a chance of an elk on the side...

Do you folks use one of those big heated camp tents?

Nice! I bet you have to have that equipment to camp during a Montana Winter. Cooking must be much better using one of those tents too, huh?

In some places it starts mid Aug , called  shoulder season cows on private land .
General  bull/cow public/private land  starts 5 weeks before thanksgiving.
Then back to "shoulder season" till mid Feb.

It appears you folks have some nice weather to hunt. You have too many elk, it looks like. People should hunt Montana instead of so many hunting Colorado.
