Title: Since 1/1/04.....What Have You Hunted?
Post by: Big58cal on April 22, 2004, 11:31:07 PM
I'm just curious as to what everyone has hunted (and when) since the first of the year.  I also want to try to see how many other idiots like me turkey hunt!

Since the first of the year, I've squirrel hunted in January and turkey hunted this month (April).  The other critters that have died of "lead-poisoning" around our place weren't really hunted.  They were basically opportunistic.

What about the rest of you?  What have you hunted?

I'll just have to live vicariously through you guys.     The rats have kept me so busy over the past few months that I haven't even opened the gun cabinet.    :?

The good news is.... some monster crows have been stealing the feed that my wife has been putting on the deck....time to scatter some feathers!

sounds good BC I just picked up my  new 17...
it's a marlin 917 with the laminated  stock and the blued barrel/ action.
I need to pick up a scope for it....  once I do I will post some pictures of that and a few of my other babys....

then the fun part comes in... sighting it in and seeing what kind of groups it will shoot....  any reccomendations for breaking in barrels on 17s????
is it even needed???

I didn't know Marlin made the  .17 in the the 917.  Mine is the 17VS.  Check Ebay for some scopes.  You can usually find some pretty good deals on some on there.  I've gotten 1 off there and it is really good.  Since you've been checking them out, you basically know what's going to be a good deal and what isn't.  Make sure you check the shipping charges though!!!!!!   People tend to try to gouge you on shipping.

As far as breaking in the barrel, run a brush, solvent, and patches down the barrel after every 10 shots until you get up to about 200 shots (you don't have to get it spotless, just most of the fouling).  I know it's a pain, but it's yet to fail me! :D   After the 200 shots, I usually just clean mine after the major season (squirrel for .17, deer/coyote for .270), or I've shot a lot, or when accuracy starts decreasing.  Nothing really scientific about it.  Your gun will tell you when it needs it.

Be the gun!  Listen to it!  It knows more of what it needs and how it feels than you do! :D

Thanks for the tip...
the only difference between the 17 and 917 is the trigger.... in 2004 they came up with a new trigger, the t-900 series for rimfires...(hencee they are called 917 now....  the main difference is some how the trigger and the sear are now one piece, the rifle basix sear that they made for the rifle before won't fit now.... :x   so I'll have to work on the trigger pull a different way....

Since Jan 1, with that pesky deer season out of the way. I started hitting the bunnies. and hitting them hard. For a while there, my beagles were bouncing off the pen everytime I stepped outside in my carharts. The best I can figure, I went through 18-25 boxes of shells in jan. and feb..I had to have knee surgery but I told my Doc it would have to wait till after bunny season and we scheduled it march 3. Things have been a little hectic these past few months. After I got to walking good again, I haven't got to go do much else. except catch up on my honey-dos I got behind on while I was laid up. I'm not really into turkey hunting, I've tryed it a few times with no luck, although I did call in a coyote and a bobcat on seperate occasions.   ( I must sound like a wounded or distressed turkey). I guess the main reason I don't go after turkeys more often is I don't want my dogs to see me walk out the door with a gun and leave them at home.  That has to be a big letdown.I'm hoping the next few days me and the dogs can go afield and make some noise. I hate to let them run by themselves this time of year because there's no telling how many bunny nests they  raid. Oh well. my knee's starting to feel better already. Maybe I can run with the dogs this weekend. These rabbits around here have rested long enough.

Firekidd, I just got a Rifle Basix trigger for my .17.  I haven't had a chance to put it in yet, but am looking forward to it to see what it will do for it! :D  :D   How's the trigger on yours?  Mine has got just a little bit of creep, which I don't care for.  The pull weight it OK, but the creep ruins it.  I know right when and where it's going to break at, which is not necessarily a good thing at times.  Check Ebay for scopes and see what you come up with.

Ellwoodjake, can you go out the front door with a gun so your dogs won't see you?  You should really try turkey hunting!!!!!!  If turkeys had antlers, they'd be the most prized trophy on the North American continent!  Until that time, we'll have to make due with the spurs and beard! :D   The main thing about turkey hunting that screws people up is that they call too much.  The bird that I got opening morning, I called to about 4 times within a half hour.  Two times when he was on the roost to make sure he knew that I was there, and 2 times when he was coming in just so he would know that I was still there.  After I shot him, I had to sit there for a while and quit shaking!  Now that's a rush!!!!!!!! :D  :D   Bunnies are a lot of fun, but they just don't compare to turkey hunting once you get addicted to it!

Sorry jguys... I had a brain fart!!!!   I don't know why I said that the trigger and sear are the same part..... can't be wouldn't work...

So I did some looking up, and I found out that the pin that the sear pivots on is a different size.... that's why the old sears wouldn't work....

SORRY!!!!

Well, I'm not a turkey hunter, but I did shoot a deer tonight. Yep. Shot it out of season, and at night, with a 9mm pistol and a maglight to shoot by. Gotcha going yet? It was legal. I was dispatched by the Lt. to a car/deer accident while on patrol tonight. The deer was hobbling around, and I let off one round at it's head, and that's all it took.  we are issued military ball ammo, and it does OK, really. We would rather carry HydraShocks or something good, but we are only allowed to carry Army issued weapons and ammo. Yep, my deer season has already started. As far as other hunting after Jan.1, our rabbit and squirrel was still open for a while, so the .17 was still getting a workout. The last day of Feb. was very cold and windy, and not even one rabbit was out. Got lots of walking and plowing through deep snow, but not a shot was fired.

A contractor that is doing some work for me here at home asked me to remedy a muskrat problem in his pond. He told me he has some groundhogs and turtles on his place, too. I loaned him one of my turtle traps and am heading out to his house this week with my .17 to "solve"   his other problems. Our squacker season is not open (sigh) until Sept. 1. Geeze, it's still August!

Scared me there for a second April.  I thought you had said something else!  8)

I went to the Dr. today.  He told me I was off for another 3 weeks!   Our squirrel season opens up this Saturday.  Looks like the squirrels are going to be living hard for at least 3 weeks down there!

What!.....You missed Firekidd!!!!????  Let me guess, the gun was either off or your scope fogged up! :D   Just kidding!  This time of year they're pretty hard to hit sometimes with all of the leaves.

Just to make you feel a little worse, I've got a story for you.  A long time ago, my grandfather and one of his cousins decided to have a contest on who could get the most squirrels.  Both started out with a box of 100 cartriges (.22 LR).  The one that lost, had to buy the other another box of 100 cartridges.  My grandfather got 99, his cousin got 98.  This was with a .22 LR with open sights!   You never hear about the "old timers" being good shots, but they had to be because if they weren't, they went hungry!

Still waiting for our squirrel season (Sept 1st)  It's been a long time since turkey season where I made a trip to Louisa Kentucky to kill a 24 pound longbeard (the picture is posted) and I also managed to kill two longbeards here in Ohio during our season.  BC's right, turkey hunting is awesome and is second only to bowhunting deer.  Fortunately for us in Ohio we have a fall turkey season too so if a turkey walks under my bow stand he'll catch a muzzy 100 grain broadhead.

Buckeyebuck, I used to live up pretty close to Louisa.  I used to live in Greenup, in Greenup Co.  I did that for a year, don't want to go back! :x   It wasn't a real great experience!  While I was up there though, I did manage to kill a deer.  They've got quite a few up there.

Our fall archery turkey season runs concurrently with our archery deer season in the fall.  We've also got 2 fall shotgun seasons for turkeys.  Come down and bust some hens!  There's too many up in that neck of the woods!!!!  Dang turkeys are eating all the food and not leaving any for the grouse up there!

I'll have to check into that fall turkey season BC, I'm headed to Louisa in October for the two day muzzleloading season, (if I remember correctly it's Oct. 16th and 17th) If the fall shotgun season for turkey is anywhere close to those dates, I'll have to take a few vacation days to bust those hens.  I've been hunting in Louisa for 4 years now, and each year I see less grouse and more turkey.  My dad owns land in Magoffin County, but there are very few deer down there, but plenty of turkey.  If you ever decide to come north to turkey hunt, let me know and I'll set you up on some fine buckeye birds.  That goes for deer too BC.

Sounds like a plan!  I may have to take you up on that offer if I get up that way!  There's some links below.  The first is for the KDFWR main site.  The second is for the hunting season info.

http://fw.ky.gov/

http://fw.ky.gov/navigation.asp?cid=151

You are correct.  The early MZ season is Oct. 16-17.  The fall archery turkey season runs Sept. 4 - Jan. 17.  The fall shotgun seasons are Oct. 23-29 and Dec. 4-10.  The fall archery limit is 2 bird, either sex.  The fall shotgun season is a total of 2 birds, either sex.

I grouse hunt up in Eastern KY with some guys each year.  They complain about the number of turkeys up there and how they are impacting the grouse numbers.  These are not your regular "hairy-legged" boys either.  They're all quite intelligent and know their stuff when it come to grouse and habitat.

Come on down and bust some!  The more the merrier!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the links BC, I was planning on being down on December 11th for the first day of rifle season, but now I'll have to bring my shotgun down a couple days early and bust some turkeys.  The grouse hunting sounds fun, I used to hunt grouse down in Warsaw (southern Ohio) but the birds just aren't there anymore.

You may be off on your dates for the rifle season.  Lawrence County (where Louisa is at) is a Zone 2 county.  The dates for the deer seasons for Lawrence Co. are listed below.

Archery Season
Sept. 3 - Jan. 17 - Either Sex

Crossbow Season
Nov. 29 - Dec. 8 - Either Sex

Muzzleloader Season
Oct. 16-17 - Either Sex
Dec. 11-19 - Either Sex

Modern Firearms Season
Nov. 13-28 - Either Sex

The season limit on deer for Lawrence Co. (Zone 2) is 4 deer, of which, only 1 of these may be antlered.  The KDFWR defines "antlered" as:  A deer with visible, polished or velvet-covered bone showing above the hairline.  Button bucks are considered antlerless.

You've already got the info for the turkey season.  Plan accordingly! :D   When you come down, give me a buzz and we'll try to hook up together somewhere and have an "adult beverage" if you'd like (that is, if you drink). :D

Hope this stuff helps!

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking, I don't know why I put december down.  I should be used to the ball and chain giving me hell every November for going to Kentucky for rifle season and then leaving the week of Thanksgiving for rifle season in West Virginia.  I'll definately give you a buzz when I get down there for an "adult beverage"  I'll buy.  How far are you from Louisa?  I usually stay in the super 8 hotel right on route 23.  I hunt right off route 3 on about 3000 acres.

Louisville is about 3-4 hours from Louisa.  I've got a couple of buddies up in that neck of the woods that I need to visit anyway.  Give me a buzz!

Did you get my PM with my cell #?

yeah I got your number, and I'll definately give you a buzz.  I'll bring you some canned elk.  That's my favorite way to do elk or deer, makes great sandwiches and is good in noodles.  And like I said if you want a place to deer hunt (bow or shotgun) in Ohio come on up and I'll set you up in one of my own stands.  That goes for turkey season also.

Update, folks. I haven't made it to the muskrats or groundhogs, but have been giving some squirrels some fatal contact with the ol' .17 HMR. I have a good case of chiggers and poison oak to go along with the freezer squirrels, too. That's why I'm right here now, instead of at work. Squirrel hunting has a rough side while hunting Iowa during warm weather! Scratch scratch scratch!

 Yes ,well we ( in Montana) do get Jaded and take things for granted. We have a great opportunity to hunt, fish, and just get out side! If it wasn't for this WORKthing it would be great. When I win the lottery my poor wife wont EVERsee my, I keep telling her she needs to start hunting!
