Title: Sheds
Post by: 12 Ring on January 01, 2007, 08:28:50 PM
I have never been a shed hunter but as I posted earlier I shot a huge Buck who"s antlers had already fallen off. I really would like to find the rack it coulden't have fallen off more then 48 hours before I shot the deer. I am looking for any suggestions as to where to look for these sheds. The piece I shot him in is only about 30 Ac. but across the street on two sied are 2 huge tracks of land. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

I'd bet ol' Plott has them... it seems a bit early for the antlers to be shed naturally... I'll bet you a cold one that plott shot them off...

I have my stick sharpened today.

I read earlier that someone on here has been shooting the antlers off of deer this season.  You might ask if he has them.   ;D

i usually have the best luck looking at food sources (obviously), but also, if the land is hilly or has rough terrin, look where the deer have to cross a stream bed/fence......anything that makes em jump or duck makes the racks fall off.

i look towards the back borders of yards, behind garages, and next to woodpiles. next to gardens is a good place to look too.

Examine the weather history for the 2 weeks prior to the kill... If it was warmer than normal, look at green food sources, if colder than normal, look at grain fields/acorns/honesuckle patches... The colder it is, the more energy they use to stay warm, so they need high sources of protein=energy... The warmer temps... imagine yourself in the summer time wearing your coat, woudlnt you want a "Lite meal"???
As also stated above, if you cannot find them in the food sorces, then back track the trails leading to the bedroom, or south facing hill sides that get good sunlight durring the cold snaps ....  O0
I use to stumble on a few sheds each year, now I just go in and pick them up by studying the weather in relation to the shedding season that typicaly peaks in March!!!!
Hope you find them,
Paul
