Title: Shot Distance
Post by: Gutpiles on September 16, 2003, 02:44:03 PM
You always hear people talking about the long shots that they've taken.   What's the SHORTEST shot that you've taken?

Bow:  about 10 yds from the base of the tree that I had climbed.  (Makes for a narrow shot. hehe)

Rifle:  sitting in my pop up blind - 300mag -  buck walks out about 25 yds in front of me.  I'm not sure if the lead put him down or the muzzle blast just burned a hole in him.

Shortest with a bow - right under my stand.  I was about 20-25' up the tree.

Shortest with a gun - about 10'.  Of course it was a muzzleloader!!!!!!  It was one of those, "POOF"  Dead Deer things!

Longest shot was 110 yds on a little doe that had blown at me the night before (paybacks are hell, aren't they!).

My shortest shot was at a feral goat in New Zealand.  I was sitting next to a game trail and a young billy, one of about twenty in a mob walked up to me and just kept comming he got within 10' before I let him have it     My longest was a Fallow Deer, the shot was at about 300yards across a gully, also in New Zealand. Iused a .303 rifle for both.

closest with bow was 15 yards

closest with 20g shotgun slug was about 10 yards

longest with an old smith and wesson full choke barrel 20g pump was about 80 yards

Closest with a rifle..(300 mag)...I was in a stand, and he was kinda right under me.  Maybe 20 feet up there.  Don't recommend it.  Blowed his backbone away.
What was left was only suitable for stew meat, if'n ya get my point.

.Neck/head shots are the only way to go!  Of the last 16 deer I've gotten over the past 3 years, only 4 weren't neck/head shots!  The 4 that weren't were because of either wanting to have the head mounted or lack of time to aim (a.k.a. skiddish deer). :D

I've gotten old and lazy and don't like to chase them down anymore! 8)

Aw, now now, boys.

Trackin's the best part.  I was raised to make a lethal shot....I prefer to blow their hearts right outta them.  But, us folks that live out in the sticks were raised to track em up.  I would normally never shoot a deer like I did that one....and haven't since...but fellows, I was a kid....had the fever.

But, I prefer to track em up.  It's loads o' fun.

Man that M-1 Garand 30-06 Just aint fogiving at that close range. I blew out 2 or 3 of his vertebrea. Droped him on the spot though.

I shot a rabbit when I was a kid with an old hex barrel Winchester pump .22 WRF. The muzzle wasn't more than an inch from his head. Yeah, he thought he was hid real good!  I have a big Cinnamon bear on my wall that I killed with an old 12 GA. double barreled Stevens. He was a real trouble maker near Cotton, Minn. One day I saw him rush two gals with a bunch of kids that were berry picking. Trouble was, I was in my tree stand and the bear and another was right under me, and I was just ready to loose the arrow. The people came out into my clearing and the damn cinamon rushed them. They didn't see the bear until it hauled up just a few yards from them. I was hollering  to try and warn them and hopefully scare off the bear, but he ignored me. The two gals took off running, which is usuall the wrong thing to do. The kids were out front leading the pack. Well, then Mr. nasty just walked back into the brush. That day was shot, so the next day I went bact in and took my old Stevens. I practically ran right into the bear going around a thick bush. The bear rose up on his hind legs and then just looked at me. I swung up on him but sure as heck didn't want to shoot that close. The bear dropped down and ran a tight circle on me, and I killed him when he was stepping in on me. The cutload took him right in the side of the neck, blew up two neck bones, and severed the spinal cord. I am glad I wasn't carrying the bow that morning! He was less than 3 feet from my muzzle when I shot him. He flopped like a chicken all over the place, and really cleared some brush! I was busy keeping out of his way. I had loaded one barrel with a cutload and one with a slug, just in case I was going to have a run in with him. I didn't select the barrel when I shot, I just pulled a trigger, and it happened to be the cutload, fortunately.  Cutloads kick like heck, but I don't remember the recoil!
