Title: BEAVER!!!
Post by: opp08 on April 27, 2007, 01:32:14 AM
Last night, me and a few of my buddies went out to my farm to hang out. we were havin a good time and at around 1:30 decided to take a tour along the pond. I carried my .17 (no scope  :'( ) and my other friend carried his ruger 10/22 ( ;D ). Anyways, we were walkin along the edge of the pond talkin whenever we hear a splash, water swish around and grass start to rustle. we headed over toward the sound ready for anything. i thought it might have been my dog until i shined my spotlight on it. it was a beaver for sure, but my light was dim so i couldnt see much of anything else. it started running away from us and me and my friend with the 22 got 20 feet apart and started walking toward it opening fire. it was dark and we went through a clip of cartridges each until my friend finally nailed him in the neck. it started flopping around, obviously the 22 wasnt a strong enough rifle  ;D . Anyways, when i got up to it i put it out of its misery with a 17 bullet through the left eye. after i shot we were positive it was dead so we walked up on it and by god it was the biggest beaver i had ever seen! we loaded it up in my truck and brought it back to my garage where we dress all our animals and put him on our scale. that thing weighed 63 lbs! thats prolly not anything compared to yalls beavers up north but it is huge for down here east texas! anyways, we cut off the tail and skinned it. we are tanning the fur and selling the tail to texas parks and wildlife. they will give you 40-50 bucks depending on how big the tail is. we went back to the battlefield this mornin and followed our trail from the night before. we chased that beaver atleast 200 yards before finally killing it. i havent had that much fun in years! and you know what the good thing is? i got paid to do it! ;D sorry guys but i just had to brag about my trophy beaver!

I could make a comment, but I won't. :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

Sounds like a big dude though!  You should see if you can get Texas Parks and Wildlife to see if they can estimate the age of that thing.  It would be interesting to see how old it was if it was that big.  Also, 200 hundred yards, huh?  Wouldn't have been alcohol involved anywhere previous to this would there have been?  ^-^

At least 25 years ago  a Trapper friend of mine gave us several Beaver tails to cook.. My children still rembember that and will never forgive me for it.  BLEEEECH !!!! It is eating mostly fat and no taste.
The beaver is considered a Fur bearing beast here and you can't just shoot it legal. We had 16 of them taken out by a Trapper here last season and still have plenty.
As for the word "beaver" being a Canadian, it has more then one  meaning,  but I am not talking    ;D

She has a way of doing that.   ;D I wonder when she's going to be settled and back here? I miss picking on her and the other gals that suffer our comments.

Back to beaver, BBQed beaver is great eating.
My folks put a beaver in the over one time. The smell was unreal!  :buck2 Dad tossed it to the dogs before it was even done in the oven.  :-X

I would have thought that having a number of beavers buiilt dams and creating small lakes would be a good thing for some of those dried up lands you got in the SW ???

Beaver do cause some serious problems for local farmers. Years ago we had some relation that had a creek running through their farm. Beaver dammed up the creek and also cut and dragged a lot of their producing cornstalks to their dam. Then, the beaver would continue raising the water level and flooding the field.

Desperate, the farmer many times tore holes into the dam, but the beaver repaired it in one night of work. So, ol' Clarence got mad enough and used 3 sticks of dynamite on the bever dam.

The beaver took it in stride and quickly repaired the damage, underestimating Clarence's abilities. Clarence returned to the dam and used a whole case of dynamite for the next demolition attempt.  That big explosion rained beaver and dam. He must have wiped out the whole lot of the bucktoothed critters. Ol' Clarence never had another beaver build a dam on his stretch of the creek.  ;D

Years ago when I was a kid we had several big gardens. In one garden my dad rototilled up a TNT loaded artillery shell, about a 5" projectile. we didn't realize what it was for several more years. We figured, probably correctly, it was blown several miles as a result of one of the explosions from my present workplace.
Anyhow, Dad figured it was just an empty steel projectile. We used it for a shop doorstop at home. Many times the projectile was knocked over on the concrete floor.
A few years later I got to inspecting the thing and discovered it was indeed a loaded shell. The fuse on the bottom of the base was severely corroded and probably very dangerous. Dad was shocked when he discovered what I showed him.

So, we all loaded up into the family junker with the shell and went to Clarence's farm for a day of fun and work.
Down the hill and out on the bottomground field was a doze pile. we put the shell on the doze pile and set the pile afire. All day the big pile burned and all day old C. cussed and repeated the $#&%*#$ shell wasn't going to do anything. C. was a professional cusser.

Anyhow, ol' C. had just rattled off the same words when suddenly there was a huge explosion in the fire. what was left of the big fire logpile was blown all over the field.   ;D

Back to beavers, folks that have eaten beaver tails tell me it's like eating nasty tasting rubber.

In all seriousness John, you should really consider writing a book about "The Amazing Adventures of John Andrews". O0 ;D  I believe it would be a best-seller. O0

;D  ;D ;D Ol' Clarence must have been a natural worrywart, though. Every time we visited, he made sure the dynamite, fuse, and #5 caps were locked up before we got there.  We knew how to blast stumps before we were out of grade school.  :)
Later in school, we all had speech class. I got up in front of the class and gave a speech about how to handle explosives, blowing stumps and rails, and how to make your own stumpblower if you didn't have dynamite. I got an "A". The class and teacher were spellbound.

The next speech I gave was about trapping beaver and how my dad's cousin's husband Clarence blew up the beaver dam. Another "A". Citified folks are easy to entertain.
