Title: man i am hating life
Post by: Morax on July 13, 2008, 12:49:58 PM
remember a while back i posted about a "friend" who knows all about all, well in the past 2 days i have fielded 5 phone calls from him about reloading, seems he got handed a book for long range accuracy, and this is now what he is wanting to do.. driving me nuts cause everything i was trying to tell him, he was saying "well the book says"  trying to explain things in terms he understood just for him to quote what i was saying out of the book back to me and i am saying well I JUST SAID THAT!

he went out and spent 360.00 on bullets and case prep stuff and still donno what he is doing. i donno thanks for letting me vent  :-P

i guess thats why i get along with all the folks here, we all come from the school of "make it work one more day"!!

but to accually call someone ask them something then tell them they are wrong? man i wanna throttle him!   funniest part of the convo  was when he tried to goad me into a fight over speed,   "well you know stock out of the gate "MY" 6mm is faster than your .243"    I chuckled and said yes, yes it is, but speed dont kill its the sudden stop at the end, he had no reply   :idiot2

Yeah, this ones got a thing or two to learn, if he survives his reloading experience. Sometimes they need reminding that G'hogs are not nearly as impressed with 4000 fps misses as they are with 2500 fps between the eyes  O0

look on the positive, he keeps supporting the economy and Berger bullets( I presume that is what he wants to use for long range) are made in the USA

ohhh we got into a huge talk about that as well, he is dead set on sierra match-kings..  i dont have nothing against sierras, but i know there is much better for longer range than these..  and of course i tossed in the weigh each one and seperate them and blah blah and he says well of course  i will do that, will toss them on the beam scale and check before ...    i laughed and said go get digital if yer doing this...  man i need to record him one day  :idiot2

Match type bullets for hunting??  Great!! That about puts the icing on the cake.

I think I saw a similar situation on one of the TV's Hunting  series where someone uses Federal Match grade bullets for hunting. I am not familar with Federal stuff so I don't know whether this is match quality ammo with hunting bullets or the Match/Target style. Anybody got some smarts on this?

July issue of Field and Stream had rankings of different guns as far as precision is concerned. They used federal match grade bullets, and commented that they are definitely not the bullets you would want to take hunting on account of the very little, if any, expansion properties.

In pa you have to use bullets that expand or are solid lead i believe.

yes this is true, but basically anything but military ammo will deform enough to be called "expanded"..

really? so even fullmetal jacket like wolf ammunition makes.

Wolf tends to make steel core ammo, making it illegal for hunting purposes, but that aside, I think FMJ ammo deforms enough. Better do your research though. Better safe than sorry. O0

this is correct,  a friend of mine uses a .308 with copper jacketed BRONZE tipped for deer hunting, yep it is legit.  as long as there is a deformation it is usable, the steel core stuff is not allowed, BUT 99.8% of the game wardens out here are not looking that deeply into the infractions, if you are "clean" they let you alone, but now if they bust you on one thing they will fine tooth comb you.

Morax: Those Bronze tipped bullets. Remington makes a Bronze Point bullet  and load it in the 30-06 and 270 Win. They are basically a protected tip hollow point and not a solid. Is that what this guy is using.Years ago a Canadian company made something similar called a Copper Point Expanding.

Re match bullets, those HP's with the small opeming may or may not expand, the ones that are FMJ  will probably zip right thru with very little expansion 'less you hit a bison on the head.

yeah BBF, I do believe the bronse tips are just that, basically a large "V-Max" type bullet with a bronse instead of the poly tip on them, i do also believe they were rems he was using, but i could be wrong, as i aint seen the guy hold the gun for close to 8 years

I used the bronze tip .30/06 Remingtons on mule deer in Utah. They work great.
