Title: Michigan New Doe Season
Post by: ilovebigracks on August 19, 2008, 12:00:16 PM
I have a question for  you guys. Michigan opened a new doe gun season season the week before the youth hunt  and opening day of bow season. Does anyone think this will scare the deer for the youths and bow hunters. I also think this will cause more poaching as the bucks will walk into range and people will shoot them. WHat does everyon think about this???? >:( >:( >:(

Well I hope one of the several big bucks makes it thru to bow season.80 to 90 degree temps better find the deer quick and process it quicker. With as few DNR as MI has per county and the big bucks being in summer feeding habits on private land, what do you think.A week of doe shooting. Then two days of shooting at either sex.I see what big bucks that are left being nocturnal. The does really spooky,The young 1 1/2 old bucks alot more wary for several weeks into bow season. The foliage will still be heavy on trees.I think that there was not much thought behind this season other than killing a bunch of deer setting along crop fields. This on top of the farmers with crop tags killing deer and just leaving in fields, a farmer by us  has shot 18 so far and just left in field. The guys that shoot 5 to 10 bucks during the season around the area do you really think they will pass a big buck at 50 yards with a gun during the doe season. What would have been so wrong with havening the season 3rd. week of Oct.This would have gave youth hunters a chance at there deer. The bow hunters there chance for first couple weeks. The foliage would be less. The temps cooler, which in turn adds to more deer movement during legal shooting hours. The bigger bucks out of summer feeding habits so less would be poached as easy.      The standard excuse we here every year about deer numbers not being taken was it was to warm(40 to 60) degree weather or raining. This doesn't make sense to make a deer season when temps are gonna be in 80's and 90's does it.I think alot of deer will spoil if not found in hour or so in those temps figuring in travel and process times.Sorry to vent on ya but this wasn't well thought out.I had posted earlier on it myself.

agreed with Hoytman...but I also feel especially bad fot the youths, we as a nation need to enroll new hunters, and the earlier the better...give the youngans first crack, but maybe a 2 week bow opener before the youths would best suit everyone, and maybe issuing more doe permits instead of a doe only season...just random thoughts.....

They did the unlimited doe tags for 10 years or close to it.We have late doe only seasons in alot of the lower states. We Have one DNR officer per county.Michigan is a basically hunt on your honor system.I called the DNR a couple years back for a guy shooting bucks OCT 15 with a gun behind my stand (called the hotline and officer himself)  several times.I finally called the cops after several phone calls to them cop came out. They told the guy to hang deer up and dnr would be out to get it.There was no tickets issued nobody arrested or guns taken. They hung deer over dog fence area. The dogs eat rear end out of deer in the four days it took DNR to come out and get deer.I was told by state police that the DNR turns his phone off on his days off and after 5pm on week days. That kinda left a sour taste in my mouth for our DNR.I just don't see alot of hope for the monster bucks stepping out in front of somebody with a gun during the doe only season.I think you will see alot of big buck photo's of supposed early bow season kills or some youths with really big bucks.

where i hunt at, it should not make a difference as crop damage shooting has been going on since august. just hunt the soybeans and alfalfa and you should see plenty of deer. O0

I am hunting this sunday...  But I prefer a doe anyway.  The hunt is private land only and only in certain DMUs.

I have been hunting public land the past few years and got invited to go this Sunday to a farm with some acerage to it, and I couldn't pass it up.  I like seeing my pantry full of canned meat and my freezer full too!  Will be hunting public lands again during Nov. Firearm season, but it always scares me to be out in an area with SO many people with loaded firearms and no common sense.  I would be much happier if I could do this kind of hunt (special 5-day doe hunt) instead of having to go on public lands.... I need to get up north to the UP soon.  I would love having my own land to hunt on instead of spending my time here in the LP on a 2.5 acre lot, working my butt off for someone elses pockets.
