April, I was hunting with a buddy years ago, and the other fellow and I were hunting with .270s. He shot a doe and caught her about where you caught that one, only he just nicked it in the throat. The deer went straight down and was dead when we got to it. We were pretty young then, so we asked a big time hunter what killed that deer. He told us the shockwave from the bullet was just like a karate chop to the throat. The deer was a doe in her prime.

My gun will usually drop them in the 150-250 yard range...sometimes maxing it to 3.(which is usually the farthest shot I'll take), when shot in the neck. Also, I can usually put my hand in the exit wound when taken at a short range. (I got tiny hands...  :? )
This one was taken at lil over 400 yards. And, I could barely get a finger in the hole that resulted when the bullet passed through.  So, I'm thinking maybe the distance had a lot to do with it, and why she didn't drop right there. I shot her about mid neck, and you can see, it came out at an angle down in her throat. If I would've hit bone..I'm sure it would've done the job a lot quicker as well..lol. But, I just missed it.

I had every intention of dropping her...which is why I made that shot I did (cause I knew I didn't want to climb hollers all day..lol), it just didn't pan out.

But, it doesn't sound "far fetched" to me about what that guy told you. (I was just saying out loud why I don't think mine dropped) And, reason being, I think the force in itself could knock em on their hineys. In a vital area like the neck...with arteries and breathe-ways...if one little thing gets terminally damaged by the force, it's "lights out".

My vote is a heart attack!!!
Imagine this.....

You are out for a stroll through the neighborhood, you grab some food while you're out, wander around say hi to a couple of friends.  as you decide to head home, suddenly something invisible hits you in the neck....

Boom!!!  Instant heart attack!!!

Sorry I'm so late in responding.  Guess I missed it when you first posted it.  Congrats on the deer!!!!  You made a heck of a shot too!  Don't think I could have done it.  The places I hunt, you're lucky if you can see 100 yds, let alone try to weave a bullet through the crap.

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.
