i always start from the last drop of blood and start making small circles around it, gradually moving out farther and farther.......it seems to work for me pretty well...........another thing to remember is when trailing a deer that isn't hit great when you finally give it some time a bleeding deer will seek out water.  The lose of blood and the stress from being shot/ stalked will dehydrate the animal, so if you aren't having much luck, go to the closest source of water and recheck for sign.........(i've never had to do this, but read about it in an old time hunting book.........the foxfire guide)....if you get a chance check em out........they're really cool.......it has all the ways the pioneers learned to hunt and track from the native americans.  ( i think it's foxfire 4)

now i know what you are doing when you are walking around in circles muttering to yourself. just kidding. look for the easiest place for a deer to run, too. a deer isnt gonna try to pick its way through the thick stuff when its hurt. just last, november, i helped csp track a wounded doe, and we found her right on a very well used path, 5 feet inside the woods.

I have seen deer that have crawled into the thickest stuff they could when hit, and even hide behind logs and in brushpiles. One funny thing I have seen at times is when deer are running along a road field and suddenly lie down in a bean field, thinking you cannot see them.

i was about 50 yards from my truck when i shot my deer this year.darn thing ran the wrong way when i hit him. i ended up having to drag him,,,oh ,,,maybe75 yards. my fault though, i should have hit  him farther back so he would turn towards the truck.

Well shoot, john. Why didn't ya just turn your truck around, open the tailgate and then shoot the sucker. That way he'd have made it easier on ya by loading itself into your truckbed.  :D

Talking about dragging, the two easiest drags I ever had was the first deer my brother shot and the doe I got this year.  On my brother's deer, it was a DANDY 8 pt that walked up behind him and woke him up.  He pulled his hands out of his pockets, grabbed the rifle, and turned around and shot the deer, leaving powder burns on him!  The deer ran down to the logging road and died in the middle of it.  We backed the truck up to it and pitched it in back.  The doe this year hit the ground in the middle of another logging road.  I backed the 4-wheeler up to it and loaded it up! ;D

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.
