Nothing Escapes the Gamo

Yesterday after school, there wasn't much squirrel activity so, as I was sitting over my corn pile in the middle of the woods I saw a little black thing running around it. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. So I shouldered my gun looked through the scope and when that little mouse came into the sight picture, I put the crosshairs on the middle of its back and let the pellet fly. The mouse just flopped over. The shot was a spineshot and it came out through its gut area. Which I did get a picture of.....

Here is the gutpilestyle pic.....

hehehehehehe.....

I hate to say it, but I don't think that's a mouse. I can't tell without a better pic, but I think you've gto a dead vole on your hands. I 'm thinking it's a vole because of the shape of the muzzle and also the shortness of the tail. I've only ever seen one of them, but I do believe it looked like that.

Regardless, it was an excellent shot and one for the books. I used to hunt mice in my parents house with a blow gun. I'd set out a paper plate with some peanut butter on it right where they would always show themselves and play silent stalker. Almost got one once...

Yep, it's a vole.  A little darker and smaller and I would think it was a shrew.

Here's the question though.....are you going to eat it?  You shouldn't kill it unless you're going to eat it.

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

Guys, I did a Yahoo image search on a vole and saw some pics. Believe me that isn't a vole. Thanks for informing me, but it ain't a vole.

I shot him from about 15 yards.....

Big58Cal, I am not going to eat it because there is nothing to eat on it. Besides this is a scavenger. I would never eat a mouse. So if shot a coyote, you would eat it?  You cannot eat a carnivore because the meat is too tough, with the exception of a bear. I don't eat garden/yard pests that would eventually wind up in my house. What you are saying is like that you have to eat every mosquito that you kill in the bug zapper. Mice here in NY are unregulated, just like chipmunks. Anything regulated, you might be able to make a case for about eating it, but field mice, c'mon. Besides, I left it in an area where the racoons come frequently. I guarantee you that it will not go to waste. I just gave those coons a free meal.

It's either a vole or a shrew.  It's a little too big and light colored for a shrew, so that only leaves 1 thing.  Mice have longer tails for one.  The shape of their heads are also a little different.

Well, did a little searching of my own and came up with this.

http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/StratfordLandingES/Ecology/mpages/meadow_vole.htm

It may look like poop, smell like poop, and taste like poop, but I still think it's a rock.

More than likely, that's our critter!  Been out of college too long.  Couldn't remember exactly what kind of vole it was, but figured that it was one.  Shrews are usually darker, smaller, and have a little narrow head.
