Bonneville Cisco Successful
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:25:06 AM »
Finally after years of saying i was gonna do it, i actually did it.  I made it out to the cisco run at bear lake, sunday morning was a beautiful day for it.  got on cisco beach around 8ish, got my waders on and headed into the water.  the only one brave enough to accompany me on this journey was KS.  we both dipped our limits within about 45 min or an hour...  it was a lot of fun.

doesn't look like 60 fish, but it is.

this was a basket full.

We had a little time to burn so we went over to the marina and throw in a line with some of our fresh bait, KS nailed this guy.

cleaned and bagged, some are getting eaten and some are going to be bait this summer,

it was a nice day on the lake.

It was a lot of fun & most of my other friends told me I was a nut job for being eager to drive 2+hrs "just" to go fishing.

I went a little farther with mine than Dune did. Took me 7-10 minutes for each fish so by the time I was done, I was beat. I'm reserving 7 for bait, 7 for frying, & the rest for smoking (thanks to Dune for loaning me one of his smokers O0 ).

First off Congrats!!! O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

Secondly, I'm guessing those skinny things are some kind of smelt or cousins to them?

Whatever they are, I've never done that kind of fishing, but it looks fun as he!!.

What kind of flavor do they have? Are they oily? How hard is it to fillet them?

To you gutless cowards and scumbags, who are trying to lie and rewrite history. To those out to commit genocide on the Southern people with your destruction of Confederate monuments and your attacks on Southern heritage and pride. Be happy for now. Because someday when that civil war you wanted starts. I will find you. And I will kill you.

thanks bo!  I am pretty sure they are a cousin to smelt, they are called bonneville cisco, the only place they are found in the world is Bear Lake it's in the northeast corner of utah and spills into idaho a bit.

Haven't cooked one yet but i hear smoking or battered and fried is the best way to get it done.  I should have some good recipes soon.  I don't really think you could fillet them, they are pretty scrawny.  i was able to clean 20 of them in about 25-30 min but i didn't take off the skin, i will do that when i cook em.

From what I've read, they have such a high fat content, you can practically squeeze the oil out of em. Found some recipes online & am gonna smoke some up tonight. Try one smoked & turn some into a dip. Then I'll bring it in to work tomorrow if it's edible to get a general consensus.

CAN'T WAIT!!!

If at all possible, I'll head back out at least one more time before the spawn ends within the next week. O0
