Fishin for Walleye
« on: April 16, 2011, 08:48:21 PM »
A buddy of mine has been anxious to get out to try his hand for walleyes so we made a trip out to Utah Lake today. The weather was perfect, the water was higher this year than it has been for a very long time (and the melt off hasn't even started yet) and it looked like a good day was about to be had.

Since neither of us have a boat, we pulled on our waders and off we went. About 50' from shore, we're still in what was once the shoreline weeds, and the water is comin to the top of my legs. All of a sudden, I feel a very distinct chill in my nether regions that tells me I have a leak... and the location of the leak is in a very uncomfortable place. Woo... That water's c-c-cold! Being a trooper, I figured I'm already wet, push onward! So the fishing commences and I go out as far as I can before water gets to the opening of the pocket on my chest. Afterall, my phone's in there. So I'm fishing and not catching anything but getting a nibble here and there when I decide to swap lures. I reach in my pocket and the lure I pull out is wet... it takes a second for the revelation of what has transpired to sink in, and when I pull out my phone, it's damp, but not too bad and the phone is still working. Whew! Dodged that bullet... I decide to put the phone in my shirt pocket higher up so I can go deeper and keep it dry.

I decide to wander around towards a boat launch and cast along the bank. Step - little deeper; step - little deeper; step - PLOP! I drop of into water up to my chin and the slur of profanities escaping my mouth make my fellow mormon buddy stare at me for a second... Out comes the phone and... it's toast. At this point, I just went home and spent the rest of the day with my kids... and replacing my friggin phone.

Shoulda stayed in bed...  :knuppel2

Where you live, the water had to be plenty cold, Ks_! Fried phone but ya did get after them.  O0 O0 O0 O0

Hey, the best 'eye lures I use are Wallydivers. I usually troll them but I anchor and cast in some places.

Where is Utah Lake? I've never fished that one in Utah.

It's that big mudhole by Provo that Geneva Steel used to dump all their waste into. Pretty hard to miss. ;)

HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM LIT?  :uglystupid2

Which end do you suck on ?? :idiot2

Man You have to get a BOAT if your going to fish walleyes!!
Best bait to shore fish for them is live bait if you can use it. If you cant try a Mister twister grub about 3" and in chartreuse.
DO to the increasing cost of energy, Gas,and Electricity. The Down turn in the economy.

Yeah on the boat! Take a lot of colors along when fishing for them. Some days they like chartreuse, some days, black and silver, ect. Walleye are pretty choosy when it comes to lure colors. Lure colors you take fishing are only limited by your wallet. I buy at least a couple of each because when they are biting only one color, you usually snag and lose the one they prefer.

I recently traded my boat with a workpal. I got his 18' Coast Guard bow jonboat and he got my 16' jonboat. I kept my motor because it can throttle down to perfect walleye trolling speed.
Since my boat was nicer than his, he even tossed in some cash on the deal. He didn't know how bad I wanted his 18' boat. That's proper horse trading, keep all your cards close to your chest and wear your best poker face.  :) I knew how much he desired my 16' boat.   ;D
