Forgot About Squirrel Season!

Squirrel season opened Saturday and I completely forgot about it.     I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off because of everything that I've got going on (the main reason I haven't hardly been on here). 

Friday afternoon I remembered that Bass Pro Shop was going to have a sale on a certain model of Moultrie game camera, and I knew it was on the weekend, but couldn't remember exactly when.  Pulled up their web site and went to the Clarksville store and saw that the sale was Saturday only.  I was headed down to the farm to do more trimming on the road so we can get the tractor back to the food plot, so I asked the wife if she could go over and get the cameras.  She said she could, but it would be later in the day.  Figured they would be all gone by then, so I just decided to go.  They opened at 9 AM, so at 9 AM I was walking through their doors.  Got the cameras and some other stuff and then went on down to the farm.  Stayed down there all day, finally getting home just a little before dark.  Sunday, I stayed around the house doing laundry, going through the pictures from the cameras, and catching up on some other stuff inside the house.

Monday morning, I got back in here to work and looked at my calendar hanging on the wall.  I've got a F&W calendar that shows the opening and closing dates of all of the seasons and saw that Saturday was opening day of squirrel season.  I thought, "Son-of-a-B***H!!!  How did I forget THAT??" 

Got a place up here by the house that I got permission to hunt on, but I've been too busy this week to even slip out there in the afternoons so far.     I "might" be able to get out there Friday, but I'm definitely going down to the farm on Saturday.  The .17 HMR is hungry!

Got out this weekend.  Saturday morning I only saw 1 but couldn't get a shot at it.

Sunday morning I went to a new place that I had just gotten permission to hunt up here by my house.  Don't know the last time it was squirrel hunted.  Walked about 100 yds.  Couldn't tell you how many I saw and heard cutting in that distance.  Shot at 5 and got 4.

  That's pretty good, BC! Which rifle did you use?

I bet your weather sure got hot early in the day.

It's back in the 90's here.  Our season opens the 31st of this month. My brother and I are debating about going opening day. It has to be pretty lousy weather for rabid squirrel hunters to debate going hunting.

Used the .17 HMR John.  Skinned the critters with the "Little Injun". 

Went again to the spot yesterday morning and took up where I came out of the strip of woods last weekend.  Saw 2, shot 2, but only got 1.     The second one, I think the bullet hit something right before it got to him and fragmented.  He hung on the limb for a little bit, but fell and caught another limb and hung on it for a few seconds.  I was about ready to put a 2nd round into his head when he dropped to the ground.  I waited around for about a minute to see if any others would bark/move from the sound of the shot.  Seeing/hearing nothing, I went over to where he fell at and found a drop of blood on a leaf on the ground and that was it.  I hunted around for that freaking squirrel for probably 10 minutes and never did find it! 

Heard some other squirrels barking and cutting, but didn't feel like fighting all of the crap in there to go after them.  MAN it's thick!

Those were my 2 weekends to squirrel hunt before bow season opens.  The squirrels will have to wait now until probably late November before I get back after them again.

  At least you got some action. BC. Those craw-offs can sure disappear! Every year I lose one or two just like you did.
