Yes, there is a need for them BBF.  The purpose of the Second Amendment is to help keep our government in check and for self defense.  For self defense, yes they are a bit overkill, but they have been used.  More importantly though, to be able to resist a tyrannical government, civilians should be armed similar to the government.  If the government has M16's, civilians should have AR15's.  O0

An AR15 is kind of like a sports car.  Both will break the law if used improperly or by the wrong person.  But if used and enjoyed responsibly, what do they hurt?

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

OK, I'm not going to start a flame war here.

However:
Consider the time the Constitution was written. Other than Navy and Artillery the Govt soldiers were similarly armed as a civilian militia could be. That is by many magnitudes no longer realistic.
An AR-15 or even some sort of full auto belt fed gun isn't going to keep your butt from getting ventilated when/if push comes to shove.

If it makes you feel better, buy two AR-15's, it won't change the outcome if you are dealing with Govt. Forces of any kind. There is a reason Homeland bought truckloads of ammo, it sure isn't meant to defend the southern border and I doubt Canadians will invade your country in mass.

Stocking up on Food, water, keeping warm and Meds is a better way to spend your $$.

It starts with a ban on this and that. And pretty soon, you are left without any guns.  :tickedoff

Not that I would expect you to understand BBF, but here's a good article for you:

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2013/01/17/guns-and-government/

Quote
The Supreme Court has ruled consistently and countless times that the “police power,” that is, the power to regulate for health, safety, welfare and morality, continues to be reposed in the states, and that there is no federal police power.

Quote
Now, back to Obama and Biden and their colleagues in the government. If the feds have no legitimate role in maintaining safety, why are they getting involved in the current debate over guns?

Quote
The Constitution expressly prohibits all governments from infringing upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This permits us to defend ourselves when the police can’t or won’t, and it permits a residue of firepower in the hands of the people with which to stop any tyrant who might try to infringe upon our natural rights, and it will give second thoughts to anyone thinking about tyranny.
