Come On Youth Season!
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:06:59 PM »
Well, the crossbow season officially opens tomorrow here in KY, which means that I can take the boy and he can use the crossbow.  The 2-day Youth Season comes in 10/11 and 12 though.  On those 2 days he can take a rifle.  It can't get here soon enough!

There's 4-5 good bucks using up at one spot that I've been saving for the boy.  My brother has been seeing the pictures each week of these bucks, and has flat out been chomping at the bit to get up there, but I've asked/told him to stay away from the area until Mason has a chance to hunt it.  The kicker is, the spot is on my brother's land!  ;D

I've got a blind set up up there and it hasn't been hunted yet this year.  I've been wanting to hunt it to get the freaking groundhog that's still up there, but have refrained.  ;)

I've let Bo see the pictures of these bucks.  :o   Hopefully we'll have a good wind during the Youth Season and one of those critters will show up and the boy will get a shot at him.  O0

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

I sure hope the boy connects, BC! And that groundhog is living on borrowed time.

Our BP youth season has been in effect. We have seen two nice 10 pointers get hauled out of the main gate.

I actually ordered the boy........ dare I say it......... a Savage rifle last week.  :-X :o :o

 ;D ;D ;D

Actually, it was a toss up between a Ruger American Youth and a Savage Axis II XP Youth, both in .243 Win.  I kept going back and forth on which one to get and was leaning toward the Ruger until I went and talked to my buddy that owns the pawn shop where I get my guns.  He had both guns on the rack, but they were full size, not youth.  The Ruger was used and had about 6 rounds through it.  He had ordered it for someone.  The guy picked it up, took it home and shot it, and brought it back and traded it in and told him to order him a Savage Axis.

Between that, the Savage coming with a Weaver scope already mounted and bore sighted, and a $50 rebate, that pretty well convinced me.  ;)

Granted, it's no Marlin, but I figure that the boy has got to have a junky rifle to cut his teeth on here at first.  I wouldn't want to give him a nice rifle right off the bat and have him mess it up.  ;) ;D

A SAVAGE ??!! You actually said that out loud, you know that don't you. Where is my head/palm emoticon ??
Good thing for you JA can't figure out how to add that to his signature line.

All kidding aside, probably not a bad choice. As usual, price sells, and they are good quality rifles. I doubt the boy needs a beater, I'm sure he will treat it like grandma's china.

Actually, I've got several of the junky things.  ;) ;D   Kinda consider them "throw away" guns, and in the same class as One-Night-Stands, and girls you'd date over a weekend.  O0   They're DEFINITELY NOT what I would consider "wife material" though.  Not something that you would be proud of and want to take home and show your parents.  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Mo, you definitely haven't been around the boy.  :o :o   He could tear up a set of railroad tracks with a rubber hammer!  :tickedoff The only thing that is more destructive than him is his dog!  :o   Stray dog showed up at our house one night, scared half to death, and of course, the boy fell in love with her.  She's a boxer mix and just as sweet as can be.  Mason named her Bella, but I call her Destructo.  She chewed the wiring harness off my trailer twice, has put countless punctures in any water hose that's left out, tears into bags of cans, dumps over the trash cans in the barn, cracked one of the dials on my air compressor and chewed up the hose, and has slowly been disassembling the swimming pool.  :o   It's only fitting that she is Mason's dog!  ;D ;D    2 peas in a pod.  ::)

The guy called yesterday and said that it was in.  Going to go pick it up today.  We'll see how the thing looks.  It will be Monday before I'll get to shoot it though.  :x   Got too much other stuff to do between now and then.  Besides, either Monday or Tuesday would be when Mason could shoot it anyway, so.....

Gotta go down this weekend and see if I can't tag one of those bucks with my crossbow.  O0   I'm not going to be up at that one spot, but I think I know where they're coming from.  ;)   There's an ulterior motive for doing that as well.  If the spot is as good as I think it is (and the wind isn't too screwy), I'm going to set the double ladder stand within shooting distance of it.  ;) It may not help for the Youth Season, but it may for the Gun Season in November.  :)

I happen to know what a great a shot BC is. All he needs is a shot.

BC also loves Savage rifles.

Good luck to you and the boy this season, rascal!  O0

It always kills me on these hunting shows where they're following the animal with the camera, and following it, and following it......... and no one is shooting! :? :o   First clear shot, I'm like "Bust It!"  O0 I don't think I could ever work for one of those shows.  ::)   It would be nice to get to hunt for a living, but I don't think I could wait like they do.  ;D

Got the double stand up yesterday.  ::)   That was an experience.  ;D   Had it loaded on the trailer and took it down, along with the little cart that I pull behind the 4 wheeler up at the house to collect tree limbs, yard clippings, dirt, rocks, etc.

Figured as big as the stand was, it was going to be too big to fit on the 4 wheeler and me still be able to drive, thus the cart.  Put it on top of the cart and strapped it down and put all of the other pieces and parts in the cart.  Luckily my brother helped me put this one up.  O0   I only turned the cart over once.  ;D   Right before we got to where the stand was going.  Friggin' hill!

Got the junky Savage rifle Friday.  ;)   Didn't have time to mess with it any all weekend.  It's still in the plastic bag in the box.  It's supposed to rain today and tomorrow, so that kind of nixes taking it out and shooting it.  :x   We'll have to see how it does Wednesday.  Looked last week at Wally World for some .243 ammo and they didn't have any.  Hopefully they'll have some this week.  I've got some, but I always like having more than I need.  O0

And no, I don't love Savage rifles John.  :P :knuppel2   Just forced into using them because they're cheap throw away rifles.  O0 ;D
