We went fishing instead
« on: October 30, 2016, 03:39:59 PM »
   LING = Burbot

Guys
You should have been there...

The night was as good as you can expect for two days before Halloween "witch " can be the coldest day of the year.

They won't let us have a fire on the ground anymore and the fire bucket is burned out  so just a heater and lantern.

Wind was very light from the south ish, no floating moss and around 50*

This set the tone, she got the first fish, right at dark, and it was a ling. From then on It was non stop.

The face says it all.

I had an extra pole "loaded" and ready to go, As soon as we had one on the ground I would deploy the extra.
By the time I had the fish off in the crate or returned and re bait there was another "Fish on", Sometimes we had two fish in play and the extra not "loaded". By 9:00 she was exhausted and we just HAD to stop. I missed a ton of fish just working her, One ling was over 4 pounds , she also got two Huge Mondo rainbow too one of them was 4 pounds. She hocked and reeled in all her own fish.

We kept one , the smaller trout ,and two ling.
My neighbor wanted a ling.
If we had , had more fisherman I know a 30 or 40 fish night would have been possible.
One of the better ling fishing nights I have had in many years.

Wow! That was some night fishing, D! And I congratulate you for taking her fishing. She will have so many grand memories of outings with you.

What was you using for bait?

Sucker meat with the skin on is the only way to go for ling

Suckers and cut bait suckers are great bait here in our rivers. Smoked or fried suckers are great eating, too.  You going to make some more fishing trips this year?

You fry those lings? I bet they are sure good eating. And those trout, too. Coming out of that cold water, Yummmmm!

You have lakes with those big lake trout in Montana, don't you?

folks from here have to drive to Lake Michigan to fish for lake trout ("lakers") but they are not really trout, are actually char and great eating. Lake Michigan is 200 miles from here.

Your ling, they have scales or skin like catfish?

We have lake and dollyvarden ( Bull ) "trout" and yes there a Char.
We also have Rainbow, brown, cut throat , and brook trout.
We do fry the ling , some people Poach them in water or beer, My favorite is battered and deep fried.
There "skin" is like a cat fish so is there head and mouth.
They can change color too to match the bottom, from mud brown to moss green

Must be nice, D! Our fishing here in Iowa is really boring compared to what fish you have there, D.
