Waterbug one more step
« on: April 23, 2017, 05:02:59 PM »
I figured I would at least set the bug motor on the cat hulls. My buddy is ill and we could not get started actually mounting it.

A VW motor has no motor mounts...
It normally mounts to the transaxle and that's it.
I think I'll make some heavy "L" brackets that mount to the back then go forward and put two rubber "Pads" to pull some of the weight off the Magnesium case.
they will span three of my cross tubes and mount in the center of each cat.
As to not "Spread" the cats outwards .

It does look big but it's the cooling tin that is FLAT giving it that "BIG" look.
It is well under 300 pounds

I'm wouldn't worry much about pulling weight/stress off the case. VW didn't and all them guys using them on pipe frame buggies don't. Them things get abused alot more than bouncing along on a river, however getting sufficient bracing in the mounting angles may prove to be the biggest engineering feat of the whole project. I know it has been done many times, but I never paid attention to how. I think they may mount to a plate built into the prop cage, which in itself presents a significant footprint. Certainly should be enough to support the motor assuming the deck between the cats where it mounts is strong/thick enough.
Why am I babbleing on ?? I'm sure you are way ahead of me on this.

Please babble on .
I review every suggestion I get.
I'm not an engineer designer, or boat builder.
I'm barely a back yard Fabricator.
I do ,do a lot of research, reading, and a big fan of U tube for self help stuff.
Any of my ideas and plans can be changed , hopefully to the better.
Thanks
D

The VW motor is officially attached to the Hull !!!!
I have been fabricating a motor bracket and starter mount .
WOW lots of cutting and fitting But it looks just like I envisioned and
seams to work .
I have to be able to adjust the " attitude" of the motor 'drive.
I still have to make the "Adjuster" on the front.
It will consist of a one inch ,by three inch bolt and nut on a rubber pad
To move up and down and then a locking plate to hold it in place .
That's next.
THEN finally I can start the drive/hub/prop.

O0 Really looking good, D! Your prop system should be pretty easy, huh?
