Thinking about slowing down
« on: February 18, 2019, 03:07:30 PM »
JUST a little.
In the 6mm that is.

We are loading Nosler ballistic  tip with Superformance.

In my 26" barrel I get right at 4200 fps, but that is "Maxed" out.

Please don't try that at home.

I'm a speed freak and really not worried about barrel life.

This load shoots under an inch at 200 yards and practically in one hole at 100, almost no way to improve that.

BUT it's fun to experiment, and gives me a reason to pull the trigger.

We are looking at Varget and a listed load just under 3900 fps out of a 24" platform. A few other powders will put me in to the same ish area. I really don't know what I'm looking for but I'll know when I find it.Wink

O0 39ish would be fine too if you get t he same accuracy, as you well know why, D. The coyotes certainly won't realize the difference! You are also using that rifle for deer and other game, yes?

O0 I thought so but wasn't sure. Have you worked up some of those mentioned loads yet?

 O0
My boy called today and he said he has several test rounds worked up.
Weather is a nightmare , but when it lets up a little I'll give them a try.
I have to sight in for the normal 55 BT's first too, still zeroed for my deer /wolf loads .
The Barnes 80's shoot slower and hit lower at 200 yards.

 Barns loads surprised me. I found light bullets in my 8mm shoot lower then the heavier bullet loads. Go figure. But those are factory loads.

Barnes bullets like to be pushed FAST and need a little JUMP to the lands to preform to there max.
I sight in at 200 yards with everything but the 45/70.

A Mauser 98 clone Herter's J9 intermediate length jeweled used.
It's on a used heavy 26" varmint barrel of un known maker.
