Untapped resources
« on: May 29, 2005, 01:20:40 PM »
Yesterday, the wife wanted to cram all 9 of us into the station wagon, and go to the Farmer's Market and cow town for a day of "family fun."  ??? Needless to say, these days are few and far between, because when the "fun" starts, we both swear up, down, and sideways that we're never doing this again. Anywho, we're at the farmer's market and the kids are busy making moracca's the bug me with later, when I look over and see a booth offering pecans and pecan wood. Thinking to myself, "Self, this could be an opportunity," I went over there and asked if they had squirrel problems on their orchard. The old lady said they had a TERRIBLE squirrel problem and nobody ever hunted them. She went on to say that they used to have a dog that did a fair job of keeping them away, but the dog had been dead for some time now and they lost a lot of their crop to the "little Bas***ds." I told her I'd be happy to help and she gave me a card and their home number, asking me to arrange something with her son. I got home later that day, called him up, and he's going to drive 3 hours to talk to me about the squirrels... So, I'm going to play the good samaritan and help clean up the orchard when the season opens in 3 days.  :D

Also, while I was at the farmer's market, I asked a guy who owned a beef ranch if he had troubles with varmints. He enthusiastictly (sp?) said he had a major yote and coon problem and before I could ask where he lived, he asked me if I was interested in coming out and helping to thin the population for him...

Oh the opportunities. If you have a farmer's market in your area, you might consider talking to these people for permission to hunt.

I've gotta try that the next time i got the farmers market. Ill bring my son along with me and he can talk to the farmer with me. I figure most farmers have a weak spot for letting the youngsters go out and blow up some bushy tails
One shot, make 'em drop like a rock.

That's what I did. I had my 11 mo old daughter in her stroller while I was talking to them... Of course it helps that she smiles and acts all cutsey for anybody willing to pay attention to her.

Hope you all have as much luck with it as I did.
