Blowgun questions
« on: June 24, 2005, 11:13:55 PM »
Okay, I have a few questions about blowguns for you guys but I didn't want to hijack the other thread...

does manufacturing make a difference with them...  (are "top end" blow guns really worth it, or should I stick with the cheaper ones...

and what about darts...  Types and applications

Got pics???

I wouldn't give much thought to price as long as the thing is STRAIGHT.  Any modern aluminum tube with an adequate sized rubber mouthpiece should do fine. Select darts depending on what you want to hunt. The smaller lightweight ones have more range, but don't have the takedown of the heavier broadheads. I've heard rumors (unsubstantiated of course) of cats being taken behind our local Wallyworld at up to 20 yds with broadheads, although some of them do travel a ways first and do some serious acrobatics (or so I've heard). The blowgun is a silent stealthy weapon ideally suited for urban areas and can be deployed out a partly opened vehicle window with ease. (Again only a rumor, It's not like I was driving or anything like that)

Like ellwood says, as long as it's straight, everything else is a commodity. I know they have paintball attachments for them and if you're into that kind of thing, I think you can actually buy them seperately. Also, you may want to consider length for the tube, as I have found better accuracy with the longer tubes. If you are wanting to kill a critter, I recommend using the 9" broadheads strictly. The common straight darts are only good for target practice, which I highly recommend before you go out hunting with one. When I had one, I became familiar with it enough to hit a squirrel head-sized target without thinking about it. They're easy and fun to use.

Anywho, blow guns are also good for use with making unwelcomed dogs/cats/people leave the area when using the wadcutter darts (stun darts). They REALLY pack a wallop and any head shot should easily cause a critter to lose conscousness (sp?). They also carry stun darts that have a metal spike instead of a wadcutter tip, but they aren't good for hunting.

we used to make our own, a length of 1/4-3/8 inch id tubing. we made darts from a length of coat hanger sharpened on the sidewalk, with some tape wrapped in a cone shape on the end. ate a lot of rattle snake because of those blowguns, what a blast.
