Actually, John, I've never gotten up that way, but my brother lives somewhere around there, though I can't remember where right now. And if and when WE come up that way (I'm sure I'll have to pack the kids along too) I'll be sure to stop by and say hi. O0

Personally, I like the HMR, but I won't buy one. I just can't justify the cost of ammo without the possibility of reloading, ya know?

You're looking at it all wrong KS. The .17 will actually SAVE you money when hunting. The ammo is only $10 per 50-about $0.20 each. And NO busytail is out of range. Misses will be fewer because of the unmatched accuracy and no followup shots are ever needed because of the extra wallop. You will also gain confidence and become a better shot yourself, just from knowing that if you miss, it's your fault. This gun takes all the excuses away O0

Hold up there just a min... life is full of diversity and thats what makes it so interesting. We all go thru changes in our lives and appreciate things differently thru the years. Just think about how you have developed as a hunter. Personally I started by throwing rocks, sticks... sling shots, BB-guns, pellet guns, and all the rest. One thing I know forsure is that they can all kill and theres no use in killing unless its going to feed someone. Don't let me hear that you just hunt to blow things up, in fact my state has a law against that sort of unethical hunting practice. The weapon you use is your choice and you should think about the type of hunting you will be doing with it and the area you will be hunting in. If your just out there to kill, you are not a hunter or a sportsman. All life has meaning, please respect that.
We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the coarse of history.

Actually the reason I'm getting a shotgun is because theres alot of cattle near the area I'm hunting. Are there any shot sizes that won't mutilate the squirrel?

Unfortunately, that answer would be no. If you want to learn about proper shot size, get the scattergun and several boxes of different sized shot. Take it to the range and pattern each one. If you can, get a round target, 30" in diameter and shoot it from different ranges. From here, it gets complicated. I could type it all out, but it would take longer than I want to if you're not going to use this method. If you want it, let me know and I'll post the mathematic equations for you.

I agree that gun choice is strictly up to the individual.I started out hinting squirrels with a single shot 12 gauge because that was all I had.Later I tried a 410 then progressed on through the .22 and .22 mag and now also use a .17 HMR i enjoyed every hunt I ever went on regardless of what gun I hunted with.Today I will take my dad's old 12 gauge once a year just to honor his memory.I guess what it boils down to is that dead is dead regardless whot tool you chose to do the deed with.My absolute favorite is the .32 muzzleloader but I enjoy a trip with dad's old 12 gauge too.It is the hunt that matters not what tool you choose to hunt with

First post, stumbled upon this site and saw this post. I have a .22 that is an old army training rifle, bolt action, I put a scope on there and I have never missed a squirrel at +45 yards. Cheep gun I will tell you that much, if I could I would try to get my hands on a .17 Ruger HMR but I cant afford that. My buddy uses a 12 guage and I sometimes use my grandpa's side by side 16 and go out. I get the same amount of kills no matter what I use.
