Selkirk Caribou Herd Remains At Risk
« on: February 08, 2004, 03:20:13 PM »
SPOKANE, WA—Despite 20 years of recovery efforts, wildlife biologists say the last wild herd of woodland caribou in the Lower 48 states continues to struggle for survival.

Officials say only 41 caribou were counted during the 2003 annual census within the greater Selkirk Mountains, north of Spokane, Washington. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed the caribou herd as endangered in 1983 and says the herd remains under pressure from habitat loss and mountain lion predation.

Years of importing caribou from Canada and Alaska into the Selkirks hasn't been as successful as wildlife officials originally hoped. They say some of the animals have left the ecosystem and moved north. Others have been killed by predators, poached or have died of unknown causes.

Scientists believe the Selkirk herd must reach 200 animals to ensure long-term survival. They estimate that, historically, the herd had 200-400 animals.

The USFWS says there's no deadline for removing the animals from the endangered species list.

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

Kill more lions and stock more herd animals. Simple math.
