I am a traditionalist also. I hunt with a synthetic stocked .50 cal. Bobcat sidelock. My dad & uncle got me into it. My dad started out with an old CVA .45 cal Kentucky longrifle, then my uncle bought a .50 cal Hawkens... then my dad dropped his Kentucky and broke the stock so he bought a Hawkens. (If you know where I can find my old man a stock for the .45, let me know, I need a Christmas gift for him.) After that I switched over to a .50 cal CVA Bobcat,  3 or 4 inches shorter than the Hawkens. Things a beast inside 100 yards. In fact we put down the shotguns completely for these monsters.
Be careful what you say to someone with nothing. Its almost like having it all.

For deer hunting I shoot a Knight Wolverine .50 caliber with 90 grains of FFFG Triple 7 powder . I just got a 209 breech plug and bolt for it, that really made a differance. I just got this gun a couple of weeks ago, my father-in-law gave it to me when he got himself a new CVA Wolf. As far as I'm concerned the Knight is a better rifle, but he wanted something easier to load and clean, so that suits me as I got a new old gun out of it. For target shooting I shoot a CVA Bobcat .50 caliber with a patched round ball in front of 50 grains of FFG Triple 7 powder. It is about as accurate as a .22 at 25 yards. I use muskett caps on this gun, as last year I hunted with it, and it did not always go boom when I squeezed the trigger, not a good thing to happen while hunting, as 2 big does can testify to. Got everything zeroed in for opening day in a couple of weeks.

Thompson Center Encore 50 caliber.  I LOVE it!  Drives tacks at 100 yards.

Ditto!  I shoot the same,  and yes it does drive tacks @ 100 yards  ;D
When I release my arrow Death is in the Wind!

Throw a dart at a map and go there!  Get the tires muddy on the suv.  Trade a hot shower for a plunge in a cold stream.  Take your kids camping and jury-rig a shelter,  Saw kindling from downed trees,  Reel-in breakfast and show them that survival isn't about fleeing from some cyborg on a video screen!
