It's Almost Here!!!
« on: August 17, 2006, 11:27:22 AM »
Our squirrel season opens this coming Saturday!!!  Got the .17 HMR "bug-holing" at 50 yds and around dime sized groups at 100. O0  Also looks like the population has come back pretty good from last year.  Gives me more targets to shoot at! O0

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

You lucky Kentuckians. >:(  Pennsylvania's squirrel seasons are as follows:

SQUIRRELS, Red, Gray, Black and Fox (Combined):
Fall Season - Oct. 14-Nov. 25
Late Seasons - Dec. 11-23 and Dec. 26-Feb. 3
(6 daily, 12 in possession limit after first day).
I have long know that it is part of God's plan for me to spend a little time with each of the most stupid people on earth.

I see you're playing stupid again...  looks like you're winning too.

Just like my avatar, I'll see if I can give them a sporting chance by first shooting the nut out of their mouth and then "move in for the kill". ;D

Also looks like the population has come back pretty good from last year.  Gives me more targets to shoot at! O0

All the stuff I said last fall about the squirrel hunting stinking here in KY was correct, and I got the proof now! ^-^  I got the Squirrel Hunting Cooperator Survey Report yesterday in the mail from the KDFWR.  To quote the report, "A near mast crop failure in 2004 provided last year's hunters with a significant decrease in gray and fox squirrel populations.  The result was a major reduction in the harvest from the previous year.  Hunters observed 1.5 squirrels per hour, and harvested just over half of those seen.  Looking at the results from the last five years of surveys, gray squirrels were showing population growth up until last season, whereas fox squirrel populations were showing stability or a slight decline."  The report goes on to say, "Last fall, KY had a tremendous mast crop.  Actually, one of the best mast seasons in over 20 years according to our survey!  This should help squirrel numbers rebound from the mast crop failure we experienced in 2004.  While they may not be as plentiful as they were in the fall of 2003, hunters should see over 2 squirrels / hour."

Some interesting info in the report is listed below.

Well, it wasn't as good as I had hoped.  Went Saturday morning and got 4 of the 5 that I saw.  Had 2 gray squirrels up in a tree.  Shot the first one out and the second one started hauling butt to the next county!  It started raining in the afternoon, so I didn't get to go then.  This morning, I was in the woods for about 15 minutes and shot 1.  When I went to pick him up, it started getting dark and thundering.  Finally found the squirrel and started hauling butt back to the 4 wheeler.  Just as I got to the house, it opened up raining!  It rained for the rest of the morning, finally stopping around 12:00.

I can't complain too much though.  I shot 5 times this weekend and there's 5 dead squirrels soaking out in a jug in the refigerator. O0  All 5 were head shots also.  One of the fox squirrels had a walnut in his mouth when I shot.  Yep, you guessed it!  Shot the walnut out of his mouth, blowing his bottom jaw off in the process.
