I was fishin with a buddy of mine on Fisheatin Creek west of Okeechobee. We where canepolein from the bank and a 6 footer kept casein my bobber. The gator crawled up on a weed matt a few feet away from me and kept hissin at me. Well he shouldn't have done that. I passed the bottle of cactus juice back to my buddy and jumped on the dang lizard. I had a death grip on that sucker and was about to bring him back to shore till I stepped off into water over my head. We disappeared under water and he went into a death roll. I finally ran out of breath and had to turn him loose.
I guess its true what they say about God watchin out for drunken fools and babies. Sure glad I don't drink that liquid courage anymore.

Got one with a harpoon in Saint Lucie county back in 2000. It was 6' 10"
and weighed 311 lbs. (live weight)

Got a half body mount with it's jaws open.

Had the tail processed into gator meat and fed it to friends without telling them what it was. They ALL thought it was fish.

When I told them; half didn't believe me and probably still don't.

We used a john boat which looking back was not very smart. I nailed him behind the neck but he still managed to tow us around the lake(private lake)

Finished him off with my Super Blackhawk after I dropped the bangstick into the lake(it was mine and I never did recover it)

Alligators are getting pretty plentiful in Florida and if you don't mind spending a bit more you can hunt them on private land(water) without having to mess with other people, and having to deal with the possibilty of being rejected for a public area hunt.(This is in Florida only)

It's a major hoot to be out in a little boat in the middle of the night looking for and finding dragons!!

Now, why is it that the tail is the only part you eat? What's wrong with the legs and backstraps? I'd like to give them a taste, but doubt it would be this year.  :-\

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

Any time I harvested a gator I ate the whole thing. Most restraunts that sell gator tail are sellin meat from all over the lizard. Its usually chunked into bite size pieces so its just called gator tail.

Thanks for the insight Peg. I always thought there had to be some good reason to waste so much meat.

The hunt I went on was at the end of a law enforcement seminar and there were quite a few leo's who were hunting.

This guaranteed that we had PLENTY of game wardens and DNR biologists along to laugh and offer advice when either was needed.

So here's what the PRO's told moi.

You can eat an entire alligator

BUT

There are better cuts than others.

A backstrap while possible, owing to its small size, regardless of lizard does not have as flavorful of meat as does the tail.

The same holds true with the remainder of the animal.

I watched them skin my gator and the five others killed that night and process the meat. I was offered the whole package, but when I saw how little there was and after SMELLING and TASTING some that had been prepared I humbly declined the rest, and stuck with the tail.

And unless something has changed. ALL alligators taken must be taken to a processing plant. Home skinning and cleaning was a no-no.(big fine)

Under Florida law ALL gators served in restaurants must come from alligator farms and pass both state and federal regulations prior to selling. A special dispensory license is required before a wild gator can be sold to a resaturant and while it can be done, the cost doesn't really lend itself well to that issue.

I can't say for certain they don't sell parts other than the tail in restaurants but if they do and don't advertise the fact that puts them in deep do-do if they get caught.

In 2007 my SWAT team will be Orlando for a tactical officers competetion and I may stick around afterwards and try for number 2, but he'll have to be better than 9 feet or I ain't taking one.

I don't pretend to be an expert here having taken only one gator, but I do STOP, LOOK and LISTEN when I'm around those who are experts. So what I say, I heard from them and they've got the credentials to back it up.

The game wardens and biologists in Florida have done a hell of a job and if recent hunts are an indicator there's goning to be plenty of gator hunting in the future.

I only hope Georgia gets half as good gator hunting as Florida has.

I'm only putting in for one of the 8 areas that are open for gators with a quota permit, that's one of the reasons it's taking me so long to get pulled. It's loaded with legal gators and isn't but a 30 minute drive from the house. And a couple years back we ran into one while fishing that looked every bit as long as the 14ft boat we were fishing out of.

I got in a fight with one on the coast about 6 years ago while duck hunting, 11fter, ended up shooting him at 6ft while he was on the attack. Wasn't fun at all.
