'07 - '08 Squirrel Hunting Contest - Part 2
« on: March 26, 2007, 01:54:17 AM »
Alright Gutpilers... Squirrel season is coming up for a few of you lucky people, so it's time for the second installment of the '07 - '08 Gutpilestyle squirrel hunting competition. In this post, we'll lay out the rules and regs that will govern the contest. With few exceptions all rules are open to debate, but if you disagree with a rule or have one you'd like implimented, then you'll need to PM me with what & why and we'll take it from there.

To start, the first post determined that this contest is a free-for-all. There's no teams, no buddy-buddy, no nutin'. Everybody is just gonna go out and hunt. Wish I were gonna be a part of this as a contestant, however, I've seen one squirrel in 5 months and a college student's car beat me to it. :'( All that aside, let go ahead and start laying out the way this works.

As an overall layout, the scoring will go on month to month averaged out to how many squirrels you were able to take in an average month. Any laws governing the harvesting of squirrels obviously overule anything laid out here. Each squirrel is worth one point with certain exceptions which we'll discuss in depth here. All hunters may use their tool of choice, again so long as it's legal.

All points will be tallied by myself and updated regularly in seperate thread.

Your choice of weapons will determine how many points each squirrel is worth and are laid out as follows:

Weapon                 Point Value
Pellet Gun --------->     1.5
Shotgun ----------->      1
Rifle/Pistol --------->      1
Bow --------------->      2
Crossbow ---------->      1
Slingshot/Rocks ---->      2

If anybody has any other weapons they'd like to add to the list, let me know and we'll work out the point structure for it, but I think that pretty well covers anybody out there. There will also be other ways to increase your points and again, if I miss one, let me know and we'll work it in. The other ways to increase your points are as follows:

Method                   Point Value
Pictures/Video ------>     1*
Head Shots --------->     1**
100+ yd Shots ------>     1***
100+ yd Head Shots ->     3****

* - Since not everybody can afford to obtain a video camera to record the hunt, it's only fair that it be worth the same as a picture.
** - Pictures are required for the extra point.
*** - This one's gonna fall back on people to follow the honor system. If you say it happened, we'll take your word for it. It's just a contest, so let's keep it real.
**** - This one's gonna require that requirements from both individual methods are met.

Again, if I missed one, let me know and we'll get it worked out. All rules & regs must be worked out by May 1st, as the first season opener (that I know of) is in May. I need everybody entering the contest to send me a PM so that I can build the spreadsheet to figure out the point totals. If you're not on the spreadsheet, you're not competing.

By the way, anybody interested in paying an entrance fee to cover the cost of any prizes that may be doled out, please let me know in your PM and we'll see what we can work out. There will be different categories for this contest, not just how many bite the dust. Those categories will be explained in greater detail in the next thread for the contest.

everything sounds great except the points for weapon. in indiana and illinois it`s illegal to use a pellet gun. i mean if i could i`d use one for the heck of it, but i can`t. if i`m the only one who feels this way, cool, i can go on with these rules as they are O0

What if your method of take is a dog and a bottle.. If he catches a squirl around where I live does that count?  The las one I got (which is chilling out in the freezer until I get home next week)  came from the field by my house.   Jack treed him, and then I hit the squirl with an empty 40 oz bottle that was laying under the tree and knocked him off his branch.  Jack took care of the rest.  There are lots of squirls out there, but it is in the middle of the city.  Can I get points for using the 40 oz's and the dog??

AB, as interesting as it is to hear you using a big ol' bottle to take your quarry, technically, it's not a legal means of harvest (and can be dangerous since the bottle can break when it hits the ground or tree), so we can't really issue points for such a kill. :P Now, stones, on the other hand, are a primitive tool that I think would be interesting. If you want to have that added to the list, then I'm sure we can figure something out.

tech, the whole reason for the extra half a point for the pellet guns is solely because of the effective range of them. At least with a .22lr you can get out to 60yds easily enough. If there's anybody else who thinks the pellet rifle shouldn't be worth more, then speak up. This is your competition. O0

i have no problem with the points being extra for the skill needed to use a pellet gun. i just can`t do it and i feel that someone else has a better chance to earn those extra points, where as i don`t even have the chance. if you were giving extra points for black squirrels i would have the same issue, we ain`t got none here  ;D again, i`m not trying to come off upset and if i`m the only one who feels this way, so be it. i`m still going to hunt my arse off for you guys! O0

BTW i have been adding extra jobs and side work now to phey up rent. so when squirrel season shows, i won`t have to work but 3 days a week  ;D ;D

happy hunting fella`s  O0 O0 :twisted:

Pennsylvania does not permit the use of airguns either.  Realistically, with some of the new airguns being almost as effective as a 22, I don't agree with giving extra points for their use.  Just my thoughts.

If you see fit to add extra points for airgun use, that's okay with me.
I have long know that it is part of God's plan for me to spend a little time with each of the most stupid people on earth.

I see you're playing stupid again...  looks like you're winning too.

Alrighty then. If anybody else has any input on this, whether pro or con, I'd like to hear your arguements. We can debate this and whatever conclusion we come to will be implanted into the point system. Come on folks. This isn't a presidential vote, come out of the woodworks and be heard. ;D

Shouldn't shotgun get less points than rifle? Anyone can hit them with 400 peices of lead flying at once.
