First jack hunt
« on: April 25, 2007, 05:28:05 AM »
Well, I finally got out for a decent shoot. One of the nice things about this area is that there are huge amounts of BLM land and it's all open to public hunting. The first picture is the area, just to give you an idea.

Well, we initially went out just to burn through some ammo, but I HAD to get out into the brush looking for the jacks I knew were abundant to the area. When I first got there, I walked around looking for signs and found LOTS of rabbit pellets, a good amount of yote scat, and several full skeletons of what I think were antelope, which frequent the area. I even came across a couple sinkholes, one of which had the roof push through the ground and I was able to collect a good-sized chunk of stalactites. What I didn't see was anything living.

Anyways, after burning through several hundred rounds of 12ga & .22lr, I convinced my partners in crime to come with me on a bunny run. In the other pictures, you can see that the bushes are pretty good sized. So, imagine my surprise when I see movement and it turns out to be a big jack whose entire head is sticking above the tops of the bushes. He was already moving, and a jack's head weaving through the bushes makes for a poor target. I soon lost sight of him down a ravine and he was gone. We continued on for another hundred yards and another, smaller jack (the one in the picture) started from it's hiding spot. His mistake was that he stopped right away and allowed for an unrealistic shot... which I missed. He barely moved from the noise, though he was only 10 yds from me. So, I aimed again and fired again... and I missed... >:( At this he started to trot off like he was untouchable. So, I touched off a couple more rounds and put them both in the boiler room.

Now, with the cottontails I cut my teeth on, 2 CCI Minimags would put it down. But oh no... not this b@st@rd. He hobbled off. Those 2 rounds turned out to be the last 2 in my mag, so I reloaded as fast as I could while walking along behind it. Once loaded, I put one in the back of his head and lights out. Funny, isn't it that this Ruger Mark 2, that I've been shooting my whole life... I can't hit a good-sized target from 10 yds when I take careful aim, but when I just shoot like the pistol is an extension of me, I planted one right in the back of the head between the ears. Anyways, we left him on top of a bush while we continued our walk and did see anything else until we were packing up. While doing so I saw a big lizard run into a bush. Bored, I decided to catch it and when I stepped on a bush in front of the lizard a mountain cottontail exploded from under my feet and tore off along the brush line. I had my pistol out and a full magazine locked and loaded. The following events looked like a Chuck Norris movie where the chopper flies behind Norris shooting at him but only hitting dirt behind him. I emptied that clip and each shot threw up a puff of dirt JUST behind the bunny. He got away and I went back to get the jack. When I checked the rabbit, he was covered in ticks and had several parasites sticking out from under the skin on his face, so I left him for the yotes.

Heading out again on May 5th and this time, I'm packing my Winnie 1300 Defender to make sure I bust through the thick brush. When I pick up a replacement yote rifle, I'll definitely be setting up around here. O0

Yeah, that bugger was a smaller one too. And don't ask about the buttlicker... I think he's a hippie reincarnate who's still stuck in the 60's. ;D He IS entertaining, though. O0
