Quail
« on: May 27, 2007, 10:15:33 AM »
I am a tenderfoot. I live in a pretty big quail area(so I hear) every development and existing plantation around here started as quail hunting plantations. The last time I saw one though, was when I was 10, walkin through our woods. I want to try to shoot some this fall, but don't know where to look or where prime habitat would be. Anybody know where these critters hide?

tenderfoot where do you live?  That will help on where the quail live.  There is probadly a Quail Unlimited near you that would give you lots of info.  I've never hunted quail but I've used them for training dogs.  They are cheaper then pheasants or grouse to train with.

Yesterday one of my fellow offers used a Ford F150 bullet to accidentally flock shoot a covey that flew up out of a roadside ditch and collided with his patrol truck.

Sure could! I nearly nailed several deer, turkeys, quail, squirrels, and 2 badgers last evening and last night. On my way home from work after I got off work at midnight, I nearly hit another badger. He ran right out in front of me and stopped right at the painted center line, just in time for me to pass within inches of his head. He wasn't as lucky as one a while back, one that wasn't smart enough to stop in time when he busted out of the tall grass alongside of the road. THUMP THUMP, front and rear tire, flat critter. I really try to avoid hitting the critters, but some are determined to get themselves killed. I think our patrol vehicles and the regular traffic on the installation kills much more game than the hunters do, unfortunately. Our maximum day speed limit is 45 MPH, with the gravel roads are set at 35 during the day. Night speed limit is reduced to 10 MPH slower, so it's not fast traveling traffic that's killing the game.
