Do Your Part: Eat an Invasive Species
« on: August 16, 2007, 08:01:21 PM »
The following was taken from the July 2007 issue of the American Hunter.

Nutria chops anyone?  How about an apple snail appetizer?  Or achiote iguana stew perhaps?  J.M. Franke's cookbook, The Invasive Species Cookbook - Conservation Through Gastronomy, give us a way to reduce the populations of non-native plants and animals.  "If you can't beat 'em, eat 'em," Franke advises.  There's a lot to eat.  Thousands of non-native species are having great negative impacts on native wildlife, land, water and other natural resources.  About 30,000 non-indigenous, human-introduced invasive species have become established in the United States.  Franke says these species are responsible for the decline of more than 40 percent of the plants and animals presently listed as threatened or endangered.  Starlings invade bluebird boxes, kudzu chokes out forests in the Southeast, Russian zebra mussels cause billions of dollares of damage in the Great Lakes, flying 30-pound Asian carp injure boaters on the Mississippi and South American nutria are infesting Louisiana swamps.  If you'll shoot or catch them, Franke has the recipes to make them delicious - just imagine, you could cook a hearty meal of "Khmer caramelized black pepper snakehead," "smothered nutria" or "pigeon pie." In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.
