Turkey Calls
« on: January 30, 2008, 01:20:48 PM »
OK folks, I need to get some new turkey calls for this spring.  What are some of the better ones out there, and why do you like them?

I wasn't in much of a mood to turkey hunt this past spring, or really the year before, so I haven't kept up with what all is out there.  The diaphrams I've got need to be replaced, and since I've still got an empty pocket or two on my vest, I might as well put something in them. O0

Any suggestions? ???

In all seriousness, the Marlin is a great rifle, too. I own a Model 60, one of the best rifles ever made.
Brownings are nice, but in terms of quality AND accuarcy AND ruggedness, it's hard to beat the Marlin.
California sucks that's it.

For me, as far as diaphram calls I would go with anything made by Primos. I have a diamond cutter call that I love. The reason I like the Primos diaphrams so good is by how good they sound. You can easily do any type of call, different pitches and tones, and easily change the volume without hurting the sound. I lucked up and baught one and I love the Primos calls. As far as friction calls, I go with Knight and Hale slate calls. Again they just sound better than any of the other slates that I have used. I have an old Lohman box call that I have had for years and it sounds really good. Of course these are my opinions, I'm sure there are some much better turkey hunters out there that may have some better advice.

All the actual turkey guides I talk to tell me the same thing...sit in the woods till afternoon and use a lynch box call.

That's all fine and dandy, but what if they don't like the Lynch box call?  I've had turkeys in the past that would put their snood up to one call, but gobble at a different one.  Same thing with an acrylic striker and a wood striker.  And then the next day, they would switch again! :tickedoff

People that don't turkey hunt just can't understand why a turkey hunter has to have so many different calls with them.  That's the reason why. O0

Anyway, anyone else have any suggestions for calls?

Here are some of the calls that I use and love:

Primos Diamond Cutter (Black One)
https://shop.primos.com/c-34-diamond-cut-series.aspx

Primos Piggy Back Series (Boss Hogg, Deadly Double, Dirty Double, and True Double)
https://shop.primos.com/c-30-piggyback.aspx

Knight & Hale Ultimate Push & Pull
http://www.knightandhale.com/catalog.aspx?catid=TurkeyPushPullCalls

Knight & Hale Pocket Series Mini Slate
http://www.knightandhale.com/catalog.aspx?catid=TurkeyFrictionCalls

Those are my favorites out of the calls I have. I've done pretty good with them and the Toms seem to respond well to them.

Notice I didn't say what call I like. I don't have enough experience to even try and voice an opinion. So, BC, you just gunna stock up on every call and pack your whole bag into the woods and make noise until something happens? Sounds like my fishing strategy-can't say it doesn't work.
