I'm not aware of any scientific studies showing drum to have natural sonar abilities, but science isn't everything. I'd heard they are called drum because that's the sound they make by vibrating their swim bladders. I've never heard a drum, but croakers, catfish, sea trout, and triggerfish all "croak" by flexing the muscles along their swim bladders. Next time you hear one, think of that image and it sounds so obvious.

I'll look inside my next catfish for some head-pearls. Anybody heard of such a thing in carp or gar? Sounds very interesting.

All fresh water drum have them. they use them as sonar I have been told by some oldtimers, Hence the name Drum. Hey MH, is that a mess of White Bass in that pic? I grew up catching them things in the spring when they run up the rivers to spawn.

yeah, we call them silver bass...they have really moved into the river, and since walleye/Northern pike season doesnt open for us till first sat in May and Bass doesnt open till 3rd Sat in June there isnt a hole lot to target right now... cant wait for May...turkeys in the morning/ walleye at night......
your mission if you choose to accept it, is to go through the boiler maker to get to the Gut Pile Style
